Live-in nanny here. This is one of the things that I make sure goes the way I need it to during negotiations. I am paid for every working hour, regardless of when kids are awake, with the supposition that I will have 8 hours to sleep (10 pm to 6 am), which is paid if it’s only one day, unpaid for 2+ days. If kids wake with nightmares or are sick during the night, but I am able to get at least 5 hours of sleep uninterrupted, I let the parents know, but pay doesn’t change. If I can’t get at least 5 hours of sleep consecutively, the parents pay for every hour that night. It doesn’t happen often, but I need to know I am compensated when it does occur.
If you advocate for yourself to get this and you get it then good for you. It’s not a common expectation to be paid while you sleep, however. There are specific legal protections for nannies to get overtime pay. There are specific protections for overnight pay for employERS in that the family does not pay you for all the hours that you sleep when you provide overnight care.
