I went from part time to full time but my full time benefits are now only 8 days vacation and 5 sick days. I expressed that typically, those who work 40+ hours typically receive 10 days vacation. But I then went back and said okay, because honestly, I don’t know if I’m going to last another full year (let alone 6 months) and I don’t want to go through all this trouble if I’m planning to leave. I know of tons of nannies (we obviously share this info because we want to make sure parents aren’t trying to get over) and some of them work between 40 and 50 hours and all receive 10 vacation days. I also work pt for another family (their nanny dropped down to 4 days/40 hours) and I spoke with their nanny and she still receives 10 vacation days. I’m guessing in the nanny world, families can create whatever they want, and the prospective candidate either takes it or leave it. I can’t blame them 100% for not being informed of all they were offering because I should have asked about these things when I decided to stay and go full time but the benefits aren’t the only reason I’m thinking of leaving.

How many vacation days do “full time” nannies normally receive? Do parents just make up their own benefits (I get not having all holidays)? To inform you of my situation, I work 4 days but I have long days (total of 40 hrs per week). And although there’s a chance I will be leaving, I’m asking for future reference. I have learned a lot from this job so if I decide to peruse another nanny job, I will probably have a lot of questions on how the families handle certain situations.

Thanks in advance!

Nannies typically receive two weeks vacation. In most cases, that would be 10 days. In your case, that would be 8 days.

Each "day" should be paid at your usual number of hours (10).

I get that. I guess I should have included this as well: she informed me that I have 1 paid day off remaining (which when she did the math was 8hrs). So I’m confused. The 5 days sick (50hrs) is what threw me off as well- again, a typical benefit giving for full time employees.

To each his own. They said in the future we can roll it all into PTO so I can use whenever. I’m just going to pray I don’t get sick and take a 13 day vacation haha jk

I'm a MB, and this is what I do. 12 days of PTO to be used however. In year 3, she opted for another 6 days of PTO (and some other benefits) in lieu of a raise, so she now has 18 days of PTO for vacation, sick, personal, whatever.

I get 2 weeks total. One week of my choosing and one week of their choosing.
I dont have set sick days but in 5 years i have only had 4 days off because I had strep.

Fairly standard to get two full weeks of vacation, for you that would be 8 days (40 hrs), not 10. That doesn’t mean that you can’t negotiate for more, but it’s not standard.

Yeah. The PTO is good a thing vs vac & sick, since you can use it however.

Yes, obviously.

Nanny here:
Be glad that you have vacation and sick days at all. I NEVER get anything like that for as long as I have been a nanny .

OP, there is going to be a lot of variation among nanny jobs because families need different things in childcare. Conversely, you can also negotiate for whatever is important to you. 10 days is "standard" (5 of parents choice, 5 of nanny's, maybe with a few extra sick days). But many many jobs will be structured differently. I give my nanny 10 days of my choice + 10 days of her choice (sick/vacation/personal/whatever) which might be on the generous side for vacation time, but she also works up to 12 hour days which I know some people would consider a deal breaker. Some parents are able to swing more PTO because they have flexible jobs or better back up care, some can't.

We give our nanny 2 personal days; 5 vacation days of her choosing, 5 vacation days of our/the 2 families in our share's choosing; and 5 sick days per year.
