| Hello! I have been a nanny for over 10 years, but have never traveled with the family. Looking for advice ragarding pay, hours, things to think about, and any other negotiations we need to make in advance. |
|
1. Are you in charge of the kids on the plane or not?
2. Sleeping arrangements? 3. Hours while not at home? 4. Are you getting paid for travel time? |
| Come up with a Travel Rate for all or part of ever day. Yes, you are to be paid for your flight time regardless of whether or not the children are with you. Be prepared to work all 24 hours of the day. |
1. Doesn't matter - you are still paid for travel time. 2. Probably sleep with the kids 3. Paid for all hours away with family - hopefully have a flat travel day rate 4. Yes. You are paid for all travel time away from home |

I went on a long weekend with a family once. I drove myself and got paid travel time, then I got paid for the hours I worked.
I got time off and did not get paid for that time. It was still worthwhile. |
You should have been paid for every second you were away on their behalf. Including your driving time. |
| OP here. We'll tag team caring for the kids on the plane and of course I would be paid for that time. I also track all my own OT, so no worries in being shorted there. I was thinking $50/night overnight fee and $100/night if I were on call with the children. I will have my own room in a family home. One thing that concerns me is that I will mostly work my normal hours and be away from home for little additional pay. For those of you who have a travel rate, what is it and what is your hourly? I make $21/hr with one hour OT daily. Any additional hours will obviously be at OT rates. Lastly, this is over the holidays, so how do you charge for that? OT for the entire day of holiday? |

I charge 50% my normal rate for overnights between 7pm-7am. So for 24 hrs I would charge for 18 hrs.
Ask about food and transportation. If they are expecting you to eat all meals with the family and you are pretty much stuck in a beach house or cabin by a lake or ski chateau, them that is basically working 24/7. If they plan to give you a reasonable per diem and there are a decent number of restaurants/local sights within walking/public transportation distance (AND open during your off hours) then I would tend to charge less. |
I make $27 and hour and my travel rate is $350 a day - or any part of a day - in cash - regardless of how long or short they want me to take care of the child. I also negotiated getting the day off (paid) when we return from a trip. |
| Don't let the rest of family treat you like a free maid or babysitter. Your only job is to take care of your charges not nieces, nephews, etc. |
I know how to be a team player and also set boundaries. I am specifically asking about the financial aspect of the trip to ensure that it is worth my while to go. |
