When should I tell my nanny Im looking for an Au pair?

not until after you've matched and AuPair is approved for visa.

The Au Pair interview and match process can take a while, and you might drop out after you evaluate if the quality of Au Pairs is enough for you. I caution you I have a few friends who were very disappointed with Au Pairs after switching from a nanny. (I moved to AP from daycare- easier switch)

Once you match with AP, it takes them 6 weeks or so to get visa and plane ticket and such. 6+ weeks notice should be enough for nanny

Right away. Your nanny needs to know and should certainly find out from you.

Tell her when your contract termination clause says you would give her notice.

As soon as you know you wont need your nanny you should tell her. Did you forget that she also has bills to pay? Parents treat you nannies with respect, especially if they have been good to you.

Also this. However, it may depend on your nanny and your relationship. With a previous amazing nanny, when we moved away, we gave her several months' notice, but I had no concerns that she would leave us early or that her work would suffer in the last few months, and she was amazing until the end. With my most recent nanny, who was not that good, we gave her notice after we had matched with our au pair and her visa was approved. The reason for the change was expected by the nanny because the kids were in school longer hours and so there was no need for a full time nanny anymore, and I know she was looking for jobs anyway (we found out in an awkward way!) but I was concerned that she would lose interest in the job in the weeks following notice, and I was right to be concerned about that - she really did. She found a new job relatively quickly and did not want to leave us sooner because our pay/hours etc were all better than the new situation, but she acted like she had totally checked out of the job. She did the bare minimum and seemed to have lost interest and patience with the children. It was a horrible few weeks and I'm glad I didn't give any more notice.
