Nanny family using infant car seat for toddler who has outgrown it RSS feed

Right on the side of the car seat it says the maximum height it can accommodate is 30 inches and the maximum weight is 30 pounds. At LO's 15 month doctor appointment, LO's height was measured at 82cm (32 inches), and weight was 29 pounds. LO isn't over the weight limit yet, but is already over the height limit, and is very close to being over the weight limit also!

I brought this to my NF's attention after the appointment and they brushed it off. They said they would look into getting a new car seat soon, but that was over 3 weeks ago and they've said nothing since, nor have they bought a new car seat. Meanwhile, they continue driving LO around town (to the zoo, to grandma's house, etc) in the outgrown infant seat.

I told them I didn't feel comfortable driving LO in a seat that isn't the right size and they started to say "LO still fits in it..." but then they just said "okay." I am surprised they don't seem to care more about their child's safety. They are highly educated, intelligent people, and also are in a good financial position, so buying a new car seat shouldn't be a huge burden on them. I don't understand why they don't realize that this is an important matter, and that just because "he fits in it" doesn't mean it is truly safe.

It makes me sad because I care about LO and the thought of anything happening to LO breaks my heart. I wish my NF would have listened to me when I said it isn't safe to use that car seat any more. I think they would get upset if I brought it up again.

Honestly, if their being technical, then you need to wait until he reaches the full weight capacity. By then, you can say "by law" I cannot drive him using this car seat. If you feel completely uncomfortable driving him while using that car seat, then you HAVE to say something, again! Express, that you love him and love being their nanny, but this is unsafe and I will not drive him using this car seat. If they value you and need you to drive him, then they will get a car seat. If not, be prepared to get fired.

What the heck is wrong with parents like this?!?!

I see this a lot. And tiny 1 percentile kids turned around on their first birthday. It's a big part of why I don't drive kids anymore. Sometimes the more educated people are the dumbest when it comes to common sense.

MB here and this sounds nuts. Are they otherwise neglectful?

Are you still driving him in the seat, or have you just been trapped in the house?

Maybe they just don't have the time. Offer to do some research and find a few that will be suitable. They can order online.

Ask them if they would like you to either research a seat or buy him a seat.
A friend of mine did this because their baby was in 3 cars all the time, hers, DH's and Grandmas, and it was easier to move her in the bucket seat onto a base than to go out and but 3 brand new car seats. Obviously in the end they had to.

It is not her responsibility to find proper car seat. The parents need to take time.

Nope, it's whenever the baby's head is 1" below the top of the shell or they reach the height or weight limit.

Exactly. Can't stand irresponsible parents.

And you all are 100% perfect. Maybe parents don't know this so give them the benefit of doubt and educate them about carseat safety.

Sounds like the OP did try to educate them and they brushed her off.

I have an Idea!

Buy a new car seat and have them reimburse you. Tell them you were pulled over and the policeman noticed that the car seat was wrong.

Good luck with that.
