Vent on new nanny! RSS feed

Our new nanny in general does a good job (although reading and rereading the below I'm not even sure at this point), speaks great English, except that in the first month of her employment, she has already managed to:

*leave for the day while leaving the door to the house open (not just unlocked, but OPEN) and the kitchen faucet on, and never apologized when I mentioned it to her nicely and kindly reminded her to check on these before leaving next time. Literally texted "OK" and that was that
*leave food on the stove to the burning point until I had to run down from the burning smells to salvage what was left of the food
*"forget" to do laundry one day
*use time to buy groceries for family to do personal grocery shopping and lie about it
*take 3 trips to the grocery store to buy a simple cheese item for the children - try #1: she says they don't carry the cheese and that she asked (they have plenty of it when i called and asked); try #2: buys butter instead of cheese; try #3: finally manages to buy the cheese while complaining how hard it was to return the butter for over 15 minutes in my home office while I am trying to work
*tell me periodically that "YOU NEED to get XYZ from the grocery store" for the children, although it's part of her job to do this (I work full time)
*tell me periodically that she put the laundry in but it's not dry, and that "YOU NEED to check and put it in the dryer when it's done"
*fail to put out dinner item on the table for the children sporadically
*break a valuable gift with my initials on it, not tell me about it, and when i found out, merely say: oh yes, that broke when i was wiping the table (not a word about being sorry)

Looks like i need to search for a new nanny pronto. this one has ZERO respect for her job!! Ugh!!!

Yep.... I fully concur.

Find a new Nanny.

If you keep this one, your house may be burglarized or set on fire any day now.

Plus a lying Nanny is NEVER a good thing.

She doesn't sound reliable at all ...

I don't see a problem that she gets some personal items when she goes grocery shopping for you. Why would it be a big deal ? Yes she should do that on her personal time but really, it's a tiny issue compared to the rest you're going through.

First month of employment and she has managed to do that all that? What will she be like after a year? Yes, Get rid.

Nanny here and yikes! Lying and irresponsible are individually dealbreakers. Together I honestly don't know why she still has a job!

Try hiring an American with a little education next time, OP.

OP here. So I tried to check her driving record (I have her VA driver's license number and information) with zero luck. Does anyone know how I can check her driving history based on her VA license number? Any links you have would be great!

When I type in her name on some of the DMV search sites, and also Whitepages, Spokeo, Truthfinder, nothing comes up (as in 0 result), so now I want to go based on her driver's license # (at least to see if the license information she gave me is fake or not). I did manage to find her on social media but under a modified name, and I found her on Intelius under yet another modified name as well - I did the Intelius comprehensive search on her and that search pretty much told me she exists and that's it, so I need more. Clearly she needs to go, but I'm trying to figure out how immediately she needs to go (as in asap today because she sucks AND she's a big liar (if license is fake), or very very soon because she merely sucks but after I find someone else pronto). I have to say she's OK with the kids, but of course that wouldn't matter if she causes the house to get burglarized and sets the house on fire while she's being OK with the kids!

Thank you!!!

Nanny here! Yes, she seems very unresponsible and unqualified (maybe inexperienced?!). You can try talking to her first about all these things she has (or hasn't) been doing and see if it changes. It might help! If nothing changes after the conversation then find someone else.

To 7:12 - I'm not American but I'm very educated and responsible. I don't think these things are related to nationality. That's some preconceived idea people have about foreigners but it's not right.

Run a check through her Social Security number. Simple. And something you should have done BEFORE you hired her to care for your children!!!

She isn't working legally is she, OP? Did you even bother to check her references?

Yeah ... Are you paying under the table?
One big advantage to the employer of paying legally is that you get all the info you need to order a real background check and driving history. My nannies all have filled out W4s and I-9s, and authorized those checks.

It sounds like you hired someone who doesn't believe in WAHM, too.

How much are you paying? This sounds like a $15 nanny. (It's still a $15 nanny if that's her rate after taxes btw...)

Pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

She should been gone YESTERDAY!! It would appear she is lying about her name and DL. Waste no time and show her the door. If it were me, I would change the locks immediately. Next time hire a US citizen!

Lying and unsafe? Fire her today.

Be much more careful with the next hire!

OP, didn't you already run a background check on her? You need to get her to sign a form in order to do it. You can't just go checking people's driving records.
