Our nanny has been with us for almost 2 years and we trust her a lot. She is young though (26) and just got her driver's license. She lives in Maryland, so had to go through hours of in person driving with a certified instructor. She wants to drive our daughter around instead of taking the bus like they do now. What is a reasonable amount of time to make her wait? What are reasonable restrictions on driving? I want to make it easier for her, but I also want to be safe with a new driver. |
6 months and make sure she can parallel park. MD does not require parallel parking anymore and now new drivers like myself are having a lot of issue with this if not practiced properly. |
Ask her if she is open to you installing Zubie in her car. Depending on how much she wants to drive your child around, she may go for it. Wait a week and see how her driving is. Then if it looks like she is doing fine, let her drive your child. Make it clear that if ANYTHING concerning shows up, no more driving. |
I would not let a new driver ever drive my child. Period. Can you imagine letting a 16 year old drive your child?!
Your nanny is foreign, I am guessing. |
Even if you do this, I would ban highways. No 95, beltway, 395, 270, other roads with 45-50+ mph zones, etc. |
I would say six months and then you'll consider it. We give our nanny a monthly bus pass so it can be used in non-work time also. They go all over the city on mass transit. |
Nope, not foreign. Grew up in the D.C. Area and didn't need a car. |
Wow! There REALLY is an app for any + everything these days! If it were me OP, I wouldn't want any newbie driver driving my child around. |
Get in the car with her and see how she drives. |
I wouldn't let a newly-licensed driver drive my children around. |
Does she have her own car now? Does she drive to DC from MD or she takes public transportation and wants to use your car during the day?
If she only drives in DC with your child, the fastest they go is like 35 miles per hour. I'd also get in the car with her to see how she drives. I drive and we get to go and do so many things in a day. I saw some nannies in a Gymboree and then later in a park. They said it took them forever to get to the park, but then again, they had a nice walk. I'm foreign and can parallel park and drive a stick shift. Never had an accident here or abroad. The US is like the easiest place for driving. They write 'STOP' on a stop sign. |
Why did you hire and keep a nanny for two years that you do not trust to drive your child? 26 is not young. |
It has nothing to do with general trust of her caring for the child. She's a new driver. I would be leery of any new driver, even a 30-50 year old. |
Buy her a really good big car to drive your kid. |
I would drive with her a few times and see how she does. Don't let on what youre doing thought because you will make her nervous and more likely to make mistakes. Find a reason to ask her to drive you somewhere. |
