| my charge gets sick easily and doesn't know how to cover his mouth or wash hands when coughing/sneezing, and I often get sick after them. Should mom let me know when child is sick so I can determine if it's worth coming in and risking getting sick as well? |

If this is your full time job, it comes with
the territory. This is part of the reason for hiring a nanny, they can still go to work when the kid is sick. |
I disagree strongly w/this assertion. (No offense to you personally PP.) I think a Nanny has every right to decline coming in if her charge is ill. Honestly Nannies do not get paid enough to be able to lose even a day of work. They just cannot afford to go a day w/out pay.
My only exception would be if the employer offered a very generous benefit package of paid sick days. |

If the employer doesn't offer guaranteed pay
then it's time to find a new job. |

You must be given sick days - not just for your health but for the health of the child (if you have a contagious illness you did not get from the child).
But it is my firm belief as a longtime nanny, that nannies should care for their charges whether they are sick or well. It is one of the many benefits of having a nanny versus sending your child to daycare (and needing time off every time he/she gets sick). It is also very bonding for the nanny and child. |
+1 Nanny should care for a mildly ill child - normal stuff - and family should provide paid sick time if she gets that strep throat or the like as a result. It is a two way street. |
