How do you handle raises? RSS feed

We are on the hunt for a new nanny. Interviewed one candidate yesterday who we really liked. She requested a raise every one to two years.

How have others dealt with raises when it comes to nanny contracts and compensation package?

Thanks for the feedback.

MB here. I left it unspoken in our contract in part because her starting pay was already a $2 bump over her previous family with whom she'd been less than six months (they moved out of state). If that had not been the case and the nanny asked for regular raises, I would write into the contract something along the lines of "raise will be given every 1-2 years so long as nanny is in good standing and has performed her work well during the prior year" and with a proviso that NF will not be obligated to pay a raise if their financial circumstances do not allow. The purpose of the language is just so the nanny and NF are on the same page about when to expect raises, but nanny can't force NF to give her a raise if circumstances don't warrant it.

We have a yearly review written into the contract, and that review includes reviewing "compensation, including consideration of an annual raise or other increase in compensation." This year, for example, she was very near topping out a lifetime of raises, and we instead paid for a more expensive health insurance plan, started paying for dental insurance, and added more days of PTO.

I like the PP's language as well, though I think there is too much play in "1-2 years." If you don't want to do it it annually, spell out the periods where you will consider raises: first year, every 18 months after; every year; first six months, yearly after; etc.

My contract states we will have an annual sitdown review where I will receive a 3%COL raise and am eligible for an additional performance based raise at employer's discretion.
