Cost of Nanny for Two in DC RSS feed

Anonymous
Hi all!

We are currently a part of a nanny share with one child but in the event we expand our family, I wanted to see what the cost would likely be for us to move to a nanny solely caring for our two children in our home 4x week for 38 hours per week. Thoughts on fair rates?

I imagine it wouldn't be as high as the share rate currently is given the nanny is working with one family, in one home, and balancing only their vacation plans against one employer. Am I wrong?

Final question for those with a nanny caring for just their child(ren), do you pay them salary or hourly?

Thanks!!

Always pay hourly, and the rate varies with each nanny. It can be similar to what your current nanny is earning.

Original Poster: Thanks! We pay $20/hr right now for the share. I was hoping to save a few bucks and go to $17/hr if we moved a nanny into our house to care for just our two kids. Hmmm, something to think about.

Nanny care isn't a wise place to scrimp. $20/hr isn't all that much to live on in this area.

I have a nanny for 2 kids in close-in montgomery county.

You will probably not get the best possible candidates for $17/hr at only 38 hours OP. You will have candidates, sure, but you'll need to think about what you're willing to compromise on (english fluency, ability to drive, legal status, experience level, etc...)

If budget is a serious issue you might be better off staying in a share but paying a higher rate to command a more experienced nanny - and possibly hosting in your home if that particular convenience is what you're looking for. (Of course, the wear and tear in your house comes with that.)

Original Poster: Thanks! I would consider staying in the share but I am not sure how many nannies would take on 3 kids (2 at the same age and then a newer baby).

I think that if you were offering $25/hr you would get many experienced nannies who could handle three kids from two families. Then you could pay $15/hr, the other family $10/hr (or whatever) and you're all still getting reasonable and experienced childcare, while the nanny is making good money. It's at least worth considering maybe.

Good luck.

This. I have nannies for twins plus their sibling. I can handle the three of them better than their mother. I could easily handle 3 or more children. But, I would not work for $17/ hr, even with only two kids. I still have to make a decent wage to properly support my household

She would take a $3.00 pay decrease for the privilege of working from your house? Why would you think anyone would be this stupid?

Yeah I don't get it. We pay $18 for one baby and 40+ hrs and overtime. For two it would be more $.
You wil need to pay at least the share rate if not more. But you will get more for it, individual attention to just your kids, your parenting desires only, kid laundry at your house etc.

I would go with the Au Pair.

But not for a newborn, imo.

If you're going above board and paying taxes (fairer for everyone), a minimum of $23/h for someone decent. Just hired a new nanny and unless you want an 18 year old or someone without papers you'll struggle to pay less than that, likely more.

Completely untrue.

Certainly you CAN pay that much, and you will have the cream of the crop to choose from at those rates, but you don't need to pay that to get excellent, experienced care.
