I don't feel guilty. The nanny knows that her performance has been below par and in addition to that, she is aware that if she doesn't improve she will be terminated. I am not going to reward incompetence, arrogance and poor judgement/ I don't care attitude.

You are an idiot. Why would you keep a nanny with I don'tcare attitude? Is she cheap?

Um, yeah... Nanny here. Why would you keep a nanny who doesn't care, knows she may be terminated and is still performing below par?!

Your incompetence as a parent is astounding. Shame on you! Perhaps your sitter refuses to care more than you do.

^^ Some nannies feel very entitled. You are not entitled to bonus! Sorry

I hear you loud and clear OP.

Just some advice: Since she is a less than optimal provider, why not let her go NOW vs. later?

It's not fair to the kids to have to be in the company of a less than stellar nanny.
And if she knows that she will be terminated or maybe fired, well then I wouldn't want my children to be in her care....

This always boggles my mind. If you're unhappy enough with your nanny to withhold a bonus to send a passive aggressive message, maybe you should be looking for a new nanny? Unless I've just started with a family, if I don't receive a bonus, I'd take it as a message to find a new job.

Now instead of taking your time and finding a great replacement for your kids, you'll leave them with a disgruntled nanny, who will likely quit any day now and you can only hope she isn't passive aggressive with you when it comes to the amount of notice she gives.

On the contrary my friend, it's your *children* who actually ARE entitled to decent care during their parents' absence.

Sorry about the inconvenience of that fact.

You are keeping a nanny you do not like and one who does a half-assed job? Who is the fool?

I agree! Is it just me or is firing a young single mom tough especially when you know "their situation?"

I assume that you're OP. If you're unhappy with your employee's performance, do your job as her employer. That means actually managing your employee, not by passive aggressively sending a message through her holiday bonus. You first discuss with her the issues as you notice them, and give clear expectations, followed by a written warning if those expectations continue to not be met, THEN after you've tried repeatedly, made sure your expectations were clear, you can fire with a clear conscience.

It sounds like perhaps you have avoided direct confrontation, and now you are bitter towards her but know deep down that firing her is unfair since you haven't communicated well. By withholding her bonus she knows something is wrong. Take this opportunity to sit down with her and address issues directly. Then give her 2 weeks to improve, while you begin finding a new nanny. At the end of those 2 weeks decide to keep her, or hire someone new.
