I don't feel guilty. The nanny knows that her performance has been below par and in addition to that, she is aware that if she doesn't improve she will be terminated. I am not going to reward incompetence, arrogance and poor judgement/ I don't care attitude.
You are keeping a nanny you do not like and one who does a half-assed job? Who is the fool?
I agree! Is it just me or is firing a young single mom tough especially when you know "their situation?"
I assume that you're OP. If you're unhappy with your employee's performance, do your job as her employer. That means actually managing your employee, not by passive aggressively sending a message through her holiday bonus. You first discuss with her the issues as you notice them, and give clear expectations, followed by a written warning if those expectations continue to not be met, THEN after you've tried repeatedly, made sure your expectations were clear, you can fire with a clear conscience. It sounds like perhaps you have avoided direct confrontation, and now you are bitter towards her but know deep down that firing her is unfair since you haven't communicated well. By withholding her bonus she knows something is wrong. Take this opportunity to sit down with her and address issues directly. Then give her 2 weeks to improve, while you begin finding a new nanny. At the end of those 2 weeks decide to keep her, or hire someone new.
