Our first time having a nanny and she makes $850 a week. How much of a holiday bonus should I give?
Anonymous
A week's pay is standard so $850.

A week's pay, agree.

search here OP for broader responses - this has been much discussed recently and the the one week "rule" isn't necessarily a rule - there is a range you can consider.

What do you want to give her? A week's pay?

Usually a week's pay but depends on how long has she been working for you. If just a couple of months I would give a smaller amount as a holiday gift.

I am giving our nanny a $50 visa card and $20 Starbucks card. We are gone for a week during the holiday so we are saving that $ anyways. I just wanted to give her something.

Bad advice. If I was that nanny, I might wonder if it was a poor fit and move on.

Be smart, OP, and use your intuition here.

How is that bad advice? If the nannies been with them for less then 3 months, no way would I expect a weeks pay.

A week's pay. Last Christmas we gave our nanny a week's pay even though she had only been with us a month at that point. We hoped she would continue to be great, and she has. Anything less than a week's pay for a good nanny is penny-wise and pound-foolish. People on here make a big deal about how their nanny is getting extra time at Christmas /New Years, but just consider it goodwill and a much-needed break from a tough job and then pay a nice bonus.

You're saving $70. by not paying her for a week while you go on vacation? Scum.

If she has any brains, she'll give you a new-nanny-hunt gift upon your return. Good riddance!

It sounds like a lot, but what is typical is a week's worth of pay.

If that is way over your budget, give as much as you can afford as long as it isn't simply a twenty.

It is as much a rule as tipping 20% at a restaurant. You're free to give less, but you WILL look cheap and unappreciative.

Thing is it's hard to hide your financial priorities from the nanny who's in your home five days every week.

I don't understand. My nanny might be disappointed if she didn't get a weeks pay as bonus, but she's not going to quit a well-paying job with 2 families (we are in a share) in her preferred neighborhood and preferred hours over a non-guaranteed bonus.
