I had a 6 year part time position and didn't get a bonus until the last year, which was a week's pay. Previous times were gift cards and game tix. While I didn't get a monetary bonus, they showed me in so many other ways how much I was appreciated - on the books so they did their part in paying employer taxes, paid 52 weeks of the year whether I was needed or not and each year, I had anywhere from 6-12 weeks paid time off, they never took out pay for me being late or missing work, they were flexible if I ever had to leave early, brought little gifts for me from trips, EXPRESSED their appreciation in words......the list goes on.

If you have a good relationship with your employees and like your job, lack of bonus shouldn't be an issue.

Excuse me but the fringe benefits made it an extraordinary job, good relationship notwithstanding.

MB here. We generally give a week's pay and increase it by a little every year. So for example, this year it'll be $900 (i think last year we gave $850). That's the bonus. We give a separate Christmas gift. Last year, I gave her cool work out clothes. Year before it was a Kate Spade wallet.

I don't agree with other poster that you have to give full week's bonus if they've only been with you a short time though. When we first started with our nanny, she had started with as a part-time baby sitter just before Thanksgiving. She became our FT nanny after she returned from a 3 week vacation in January. I think I gave her 1/2 a week's pay as a holiday bonus. She was really happy. She's been with us just over 4 years now.

We've only had our nanny for 2 months, and she had a week off at Thanksgiving. We adore her already. I know some people said that if your nanny has only been working with you a short time you wouldn't give a full bonus. My husband says half a week pay since she hasn't been working with us for long. I was leaning toward a week. If I were in a brand new job I wouldn't expect a holiday/year end bonus at all, but I also realize a nanny job is not like a corporate job in the bonus sense as it's really just up to us and our personal choice. I want to make sure she feels appreciated and knows how much we already love her and all she is doing for our child. Is a half week pay too cheap? I was going to push a week with my husband.

Follow up - We OF COURSE guarantee hours. She was paid for the week at Thanksgiving even though she was not needed.

For 2 months, half a week is plenty, a full week is generous.

I agree with pp. Or, compromise and give 3/4 of a weeks pay?
