| I'm in a new position. MB works from home and my charge is 11 weeks old. MB said she is too distracted having us in the house ( you can hear everything) even though we are on separate floors. MB asked the I be gone for the hours my charge will not nap or be eating. I do take him out for walks and one infant class a week, but I think being gone 4-6 hours in insane. Winter is about to hit and I can't keep him out in snowy and cold weather. How do I handle this situation? It's her baby and her choice but I think it's a bit odd. |

I think that on Monday while the baby is napping, you should do a search online for activities and baby-friendly places to go.
Walking the mall? Library? Museums? Then bring her the list and ask if there's anyplace she'd like you to add to it. At least that way she knows you're trying. |
| That is crazy, I have a MB who works at home too. When my charge was a baby we did the same as you but were usually home for a good chunk of the day. Not that she is 3 we are out from after breakfast till close to nap time, but are always welcome to stay in the house if we need to. Talk to your MB about it being a little unrealistic, maybe there is a conference room that she can go work in for a few days a week, and the other days you can try and be out of the house for a portion of the day. Is your charge taking regular naps? 11weeks is still super young they should be sleeping alot. Maybe take baby out after first nap and stay out through second nap this gives your MB 3-4 hours out of the house, come home closer to the following nap so she/he is going right to sleep?? I still think its crazy that she asked you to stay out, but it's definitely better than not being allowed to go anywhere! Can you drive with your charge or do you take the metro? |
| Also how close do you live to your work?? You could also see if you could set up something at your place, I had one WAH who let me do this and it was awesome! Since the kid was so young 2mo when I started I got so much do around my house while they were sleeping!! |
Thanks for the advice! I have done this but MB only wants "free" stuff at this age, but there is only one class ( we are in it) that is free in the area. They don't want him on public transportation or me driving just yet. We try to be quiet but you can't really tell an infant that is learning to vocal to quiet down. We are on the third floor and MB in the basement. |

OP here. Let me note that MB gets work done. She said she gets distracted because of the cute noises he makes and how she wishes she were playing with him, etc.
My charge is a cat napper. We are out for at least 2 hours just walking around but I can't take him out in a blizzard or zero degree weather for that amount. They had her mom ( 6 weeks - 2.5 months) decide it was too much work, and they had a nanny who quit after two weeks. I like them but this may be a deal breaker. Ive worked for several families with WAH parents and never received this request. |
| First Cat napping is not napping, you should be staying closer to the house and work on extending naps. Babies this age should be awake for no more than 2hours and then asleep for 1.5-2hrs eating every 3.5-4 hours. Sounds l like ur MB is going to be a Pain in the Ass! Tell her driving is the only way to get him out more/take him to your place like pp mentioned. |

I would never work with parents who work from home. For two days one time a Dad was working from home for two days and the kids never listened to me. I will NEVER do that again. Everything I tried it didn't matter they knew he was in the house and it didn't work. So I said , I would never work for parents who work part time or full time from home.

| She's nuts (and I am a MB). She wants you to put her kid in jeopardy taking him into at this age and during winter months because she can't control her impulses? Good luck with this one. |
| I had a job like this with a toddler we had to be gone from 8:30-1 each day then he would nap from 1-3:30 at home. We spent our days at the mall, park and library. I felt almost like a homeless person because we couldn't go home. It was difficult but doable. With an infant that's a whole other level., |
| She's crazy. I'm a MB who works from home and this is not a good sign. |
I've been an infant nanny for 10+ years. A child this age should actually only be up 90 minutes . Have you ever cared for infants? Many infants do not consolidate their naps until 5-6 months. Many young babies only nap for 45 minutes at a time. Also, not every child is the same. Some 3 months olds still eat every 2-3 hours, especially breastfeed babies. 3 months is too young to be on a schedule and MB doesn't want to adjust naps or anything just yet. He is very on-demand, as most 3 months old are. He is also 6 weeks premature so things are delayed. It's not a one fit all for infants. They all move at their own pace. |
+1. I would turn this back on her. What does she expect you to do all day that's free? You're just supposed to walk, and walk, and walk so that she doesn't hear her baby? This is CRAZY. |
| Ask her to play your day. If they will not pay for activities, let you drive or take the bus, then what are you supposed to do especially with winter coming. |
|
Suggest a sound machine for her in whatever room she is using as an office. Or suggest that the office and the baby be on separate floors. Or suggest a scheduled mid-morning break for her to play with the baby.
