When is it too hot to take toddler out? RSS feed

Southern California nanny here and we are in the middle of one of our famous September heat waves. My question - when is it too hot to take a toddler out to play? We have a mile walk to the park (he in a stroller) and then the baby park is under an awning. Humidity is around 50-60%.

Thanks.

The stroller can get really heated. I would avoid having the kid in there for a mile long walk. Maybe there's an indoor gym you could visit today instead or a museum?

OP here and unfortunately MB does not want me to drive - so no, nothing close except the library (and we usually go there in the morning for story time). I will be so happy when summer is over!

The preschool where I did my internship had a no outdoor policy for little ones over 85 degrees.

I personally think a mile walk pushing a stroller in 92 degree weather is too hot for you, OP.

If the nanny will be held responsible for the safety and well-being of her charge, it is incumbent upon her to determine what is safe.

If a parent is uncomfortable with that fact, they should consider asking grandma for help, or daycare.

I would never risk the safety of my charge just because a parent wants me to. Never.

That would be very stupid.

My rule of thumb is 100 including with the heat index. Can you go out at 9 am ?

She said they already do the library in the am.

Well maybe she should stop going to the library in the am and let the child run around at the park in the am

I really don't understand these parents who don't let nannies drive their charges, as if being a nanny makes them an inherently bad driver.

What about the OP's post lead you to believe she is being asked to "risk the safety" of her charge? They were specifically asking for advice so they COULD be safe. Do you have anything constructive to add or do you just like preaching to bolster your inflated self-image?

OP- I take my charges out for walks/play time in the heat but for only 15-20 minutes unless there is a wading pool or splash pad. Bring water, wear sunscreen/hats, and take it slow. Heat/humidity are not automatic reasons to stay indoors but as a general rule if you are uncomfortable, so are they!

She's asking about a mile long walk each way. That's not 15-20 minutes.

If you don't want to do it, OP, don't do it. Period.

OP here. Thank you for the responses. We go to library for story time and story time is only in the morning. This morning I was able to get my charge out early enough to walk in the gardens before library and them walk around the library so I got a decent nap out of him today. This afternoon we stayed home - fine for him really but drove me a little bonkers. I love being outside. I do agree that the mile walk to the park would be way too hot for both of us.

Thanks for the responses!

I am in SoCal as well, in the Orange County area. I have a almost 3yr old girl and a 2 week old girl. The house we are in is very close to the beach and has no air conditioning. Today the thermostat was at 91 inside the house. With that said you charge should have access to full shade while on the 1mi walk, and plenty of water. Other than that he should be totally fine to go out. My main concern would be for you to walk in the heat but as long as you bring water you should be fine. You could walk with an umbrella too Also lots of sunscreen!!

Fellow Southern CA resident here as well. San Diego.

And yes...It has been extremely warm in this neck of the woods for the past two to three days.

Personally, I don't see how your bosses can expect you to walk in this sweltering hot and humid weather. A good employer would want their nanny to be comfortable on the job so either they let you drive somewhere with their child or encourage you to stay in until the heat lets up.

I cannot imagine any boss asking you to walk a mile to a park...Even if that park is shielded from the sun.
