Can a 2 year + 10 month old drop the nap and still be sane and healthy? RSS feed

The school that we want for DS has an afternoon program for his age group that is 12:30 to 3. Will he really ready to drop his nap by then?

Depends on the child but it is possible. When each child begins to give up nap they do start sleeping earlier at night to make up for the missed nap.

Tired children are often troubled children.
Please don't do that.

What are we supposed to do? His school is 12:30 to 3PM - he will not nap before 12 and cannot nap after 3 or he won't sleep at night!

Not sure if it would work with your lifestyle but you can push back the bedtime. My 3.5 year old has a bed time of 10:00. It has consistently been that way since she was 2. She wakes up at 8:30, sometimes later. Works great for us because I get to spend more time with her in the evening and go to bed when she does. At your kid's age, forcing no nap will be pretty tough both on you and him.

That would be exceptionally difficult for us and his nanny. We both leave for work before 8 and want to see him and his nanny definitely wants him up when she gets here at 7:30.

Um - pick a school that works for your child's sleep schedule. I think most kids are not ready to be done with naps every day at that age. If it is a two afternoon a week program may it is not terrible but I still would not have done it. Oldest took 2 hour naps until 5. Youngest is 4 and generally naps each day still. Up at 6/6:30 and down at 8/8:30.

Can he only go 2-3 days a week and keep his nap the rest of the week?
I do that with the two year old at work, we skip some naps for the pool though he sometimes will fall asleep in the car.

Highly unlikely + completely unfair for him to do so.

Children at this age go through so many growth spurts, their little bodies are changing so much at this stage in life that they need to offset some of this by requiring plenty of rest in between.

While it sounds like you really want your son to attend this school/program, it isn't worth giving up his daily nap for it. His health should take precedence over this.

Nonsense. I would never pass up an opportunity to send my child to a great school for something so silly. BTW, OP, we stopped my youngest son's naps at around 2.5 because he simply was not falling asleep early enough. Our nanny agreed that he had probably outgrown the need for a nap.

Naps are not silly. Sleep is a basic biological need. Read the chapter in nurture shock on sleep. Sleep (or lack thereof) has a huge impact on physical, psychological and academic success.

It depends, OP. Every child is different and sleep is critically important. He may be able to compensate by going to bed earlier, or he may be a complete wreck. Impossible to predict.

So all children in academia should nap? Yes, sleep is critical but napping? Not so much.

Naps are very beneficial to people of every age. Yes, we should have naps throughout school and into our adult lives.

Now you are simply boring me (I'm sure most people around you take many naps). Naps are simply not always possible.
