Outrageous parents!!! RSS feed

I just had a mother email me saying she would like to offer me a job. She has three children under 10 and would like to pay me $10 an hour. Is this a joke?!?? Why do people think that's okay to pay?!??
Anonymous
I make 10 per hr. It's hard to even make that much, people still offer me 5 per hr. The lowest I've been offered was 1.50 per hr. And I'm not kidding.

Get over yourself. That's over minimum wage and more than most people make.

I've been offered $200 fr 70 hours per week with one to three children. The parents assumed because they said live-in only I would be grateful for their tiny room and crappy food (I was given a list of what I was allowed to eat each day, the amounts, and nowhere on the list was a single vegetable or fruit...).

Cheap parents like this make me sick.

If you want to negotiate a good "deal," do it when buying a car or at a flea market.

But how can anyone try to nickel + dime the person they will be leaving their young children with...??!

I can never wrap my head around this....

That's great and all but when you are used to making $18-25 an hour nannying you'd be a idiot to take that job!

Exactly. The only people who will take this are 1. desperate, 2. illegal, or 3. don't have the certifications (cpr/first aid minimum), college or experience to receive a normal rate yet.

or people who don't live in high market areas. There are MANY places in this country where $10 is an Ok wage because the cost of living is much lower. Major cities, probably not. Smaller cities and towns, yes.

$10/hour would be ALMOST okay in my area, but only for one child. I had a family that wanted to pay me $10/hour for one child while the older kids were in school, but then turned around and all four kids were there on my first day, but they never once mentioned paying more. That didn't last long.

No, I'm a live-in who goes anywhere in the US (including the backhills of beyond), and I don't do $10 an hour. Of course, most people don't want a live-in nanny for only one child, and $10/hour is only appropriate if there is only 1...

Ok yes 10 and hour is low for most experienced nannies

However it is just a bad to come on a board. post and make fun of a family offering a low rate, there is no way of knowing the reason and you DO NOT have to take the job or even respond

I just had a family message me, they want 24/7 (live-in is a requirement for the job, so room/board shouldn't be deducted), three kids, yet they want to pay $250/week. Mind bobbling.

I've seen ads on care.com for under minimum wage. I don't know how people get away with it.
