| Hi all, I'm starting to think more and more about summer vacation but not sure what to do about DC, who's currently 5 months. MIL takes care of the baby during the day now (and lives with us), and DH has proposed bringing her on vacation to help with the baby. I would really rather not do that, but it would be nice to be able to relax on the beach or go out to dinner baby-free for a couple hours while on vacation. Is hiring help just for vacation something that...is a thing? How would pay work? Any experience or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks! |

You already don't spend time with your baby all day. You can't take the baby on vacation and handle him for a week? You'd really rather hire a stranger for a few hours each day while you relax at the beach and go out to dinner each night than spend time with your five month old?
Sure, you can do that. I think it's shitty of you, but you can absolutely do that. |
| Look to see if there's a Seeking Sitters franchise where you're going. You could also use the DC location for occasional sitters to replace your MIL. |
Uh, I'm not planning on lounging on the beach all day every day then going out to dinner all night every night. It would be probably a few hours total over the course of the trip. Dinner one night, a couple hours of quiet beach time one day. It is not that I can't "handle" DC, it would just be nice to be able to relax on a trip where I am sure to be chasing around and closely watching and entertaining a likely crawling baby. This is my first time doing this. You don't have to be a total a-hole about it. |
Why did you become a parent? Accident? |
I mean this nicely. I strongly suggest you do some research on babies and milestones. Most babies start crawling around seven months. Maybe you're very advanced so assuming your baby will be also? But it's unlikely that a five month old will be crawling. Also, five month olds nap. A lot. Just give your baby some shade and he can nap right there with you on the beach. People pay money for white noise machines that replicate the sound of waves crashing, and you'll have that sound live for your baby to be soothed to sleep. |
Baby is five months old now and will be 8-9 months when we go on summer vacation. So, probably crawling. Also, baby does not nap much at all now. Maybe that will change by 8-9 months, but right now, it's ~30 min at a time, 3-4x/day max. But thank you for at least being nice about it. |

Ignore the trolls. You could hire a local teen (we've done this with friends and neighbors we were close to), or hire a nanny through an agency. I work with Hush Hush Little Baby and I bet they'd be able to hook you up.
Now, for a professional nanny, it will cost a good bit: cover all her travel expenses, food, lodging, etc. and she will need her own room or will need to be paid by the hour overnight if she shares with the baby. For working hours, you have a set schedule and discuss in advance how she will be compensated. |
Don't worry about the nasty poster OP. Try asking the hotel. You could search the Internet for nanny agencies in the area, they'll Have qualified people to help. |
| Thanks for the helpful tips, PPs. |
