Any safety precautions for Nanny interviewing in a stranger's home? RSS feed

What if she was (gasp!) your daughter or niece?
We're getting more Craigslist horror reports.
Realtors have been assaulted too.
Advice, please.

I always cross-reference the person's name with their address. If the property is in that person's name, I go forward with the interview. Prior to leaving, I give my husband the address of the place I am going, as well as the names of the people I am meeting. He knows to expect a text/call from me within 1 hour. If he doesn't recieve it amd can't get ahold of me, he knows where to go. I also Google the person's name to see if they seem legit.
There is no way to guarantee your safety when going to someone's home. Check them out as much as possible.

Excellent advice, 15:49. Thank you.

Meet in a neutral place in a mall. I think nannies are crazy not to run criminal and credit checks on prospective employers and I am not a nanny. I do not let my daughter babysit for people I do not know or know someone who knows them. It's a matter of your safety.

I do what 15:49 does for the second meeting.
The very first meeting is always in public.
I have also been known to go with another person and the other person waits outside in the car.

Look up the parents on the court case searches, google their names and address. And, verify they on the house.

So you're the only non-nanny who cares enough to contribute. Thank you.
What's wrong with all the other parents here?

FYI nannies, if you act weird, unconventional, and like a huge pain BEFORE the first interview don't expect to be hired.

I pretty much do what the first responder said. I'm open to meeting in public but I find I have a better and more relaxed interview at their home. It's easier to hear what they're saying without background noise drowning out every other word. Also, I feel like I get a better sense of who they are and their personality when they're in their own home. You can see how clean they are, whether they have annoying pets, and just in general their personalities are more true to normal in their own home. Everyone is a little edgy in public, lots of distractions, I'm always waiting for the barrista to kick us out etc. It's also weird when random people can overhear our conversation.

Gosh yes, this is in the papers all the type. Nanny attacked at her interview at the house. My goodness.
OP should wrote for Law and Order or Criminal Minds.

You're spot on.

The recent story about the woman who responded to the ad for baby clothes on craigslist, then had her unborn baby killed is just too dreadful for words.

You can never EVER be too careful.

My best advice is to meet any new family at a local park/playground during the daytime. One where there are a lot of families, not a secluded one.

When online dating, it is recommended to meet in a public place at first, why not the same for meeting a nanny family for the first time?

Same concept....A complete stranger from the Internet.

NBC has a report about a cleaning lady attacked and raped in Burke, VA.

Heard about the two cleaning ladies lured into a private home and raped. WTOP radio today.

Nannies need a couple of references before entering the home of a complete stranger.
