I am a full-time nanny and babysit occasionally to supplement my income.
I booked a babysitting gig for tonight over 2 weeks ago. I showed up only to find that the little girl has the flu, as in actual Influenza. I told them I'd be unable to babysit, as I have a young charge and a pregnant MB. I said that I can't risk getting them sick. The parents got really upset amd told me how disappointed they are. If my charge is sick, I work. My allegiance is to them, not an occasional babysitting client. They assumed that I'd decide to stay since I was already there. If your child is sick, please tell the babysitter so she can decide whether she'd like to expose herself to it. Please don't make that decision for her. |
| Ugh grow up. You are a babysitter. |
She is a grown up - and she puts her job and charge first. You, however, are a very unhappy and bitter old woman. |
|
You did the right thing, OP. I would have done the same.
And what parent in their right mind leaves a little girl with the flu for a night out?!!! If it is a wedding or some family obligation, one parent goes and the other stays with THEIR sick child. |
|
Wait... they didn't tell you until you were actually there, in their house?!! OMG - that is horrible!!!
I would be very happy with you, OP, if you were our nanny. I think you did the right thing. I, personally, would not risk getting sick (just myself) for a one-night job. And I can't imagine the kind of parents who would be all ready to go out for a night on the town leaving their sick child. |
|
I agree wholeheartedly w/you OP.
It was very rude and presumptuous of this babysitting family not to call you ahead of time + let you know their child had the flu. What were they thinking....??! Or not thinking?? I will never understand selfish families like this. Anyway, I also feel since you arrived and reserved that time block for them as well, they should have properly compensated you for it as well, but I highly doubt that happened. I would just write them off and not work for them again. |
| Honestly, it is the very LEAST a parent willing to leave a sick child can do. |
| I totally agree with what you did !! The family I work for, someone seem to stay sick and I am never informed until I arrived so I keep a health kit in my car in case. I wish my family was courteous. |
| You weren't even protecting yourself, OP, you were protecting your little charge and pregnant employer. Good for you!!! |
| As an MB, I thank you. I would be eternally grateful for this kind of thoughtfulness OP. |
What is a health kit that prevents you from getting sick? Did you go to school? Do you know how germs work??? |
Why couldn't you babysit and just leave the girl in her room to sleep? How would you get sick from that? |
She wasn't asleep yet and they expected me to go through her bedtime routine. No way. I don't even want to be in the same space as someone with the flu. |
Didn't you get a flu shot? |
Yes. A flu shot doesn't guarantee that you won't get the flu. The flu shot doesn't cover every single strain. |
