New nanny job with Nanny cams... RSS feed

....which I have no problem with, I've worked in homes with them before. The difference now is that I'm bringing my child to work with me and I want to know who has access to that video feed considering my child will be on it all the time.

Is this something that would be okay to ask about as an employee?

Are you sure they're recording. My
employers have cameras too, but they are
like webcams, they don't record.
Anonymous
Yes, they are recording.

I would just ask.
In any situation I was knowingly being filmed I would ask.
I would especially ask in your case. That's your kid you should know who is watching.
I'd also make sure it's set as to not get hacked into.

It's even scarier if they are open-feed type cameras. There are plenty of websites that stream unsecured cameras (many are nanny cams) all day, and I doubt the people being filmed have any clue their entire day has been broadcast on the internet.
I get the desire for nanny cams but there is just too much room for impropriety, IMO. I left my last job when I discovered that there were two undisclosed cameras in the home.

Who cares? Do you think ANYONE in the world, let alone the 1 or 2 people who actually have access to that feed, care enough about you to watch you like Norman Bates?

Grow up

you link said that site has been removed and the security issue resolved. So 2-3 years ago maybe there was an issue but not any more.

The point is it happens without people knowing it, for unknown amounts of time. Who knows when the next site will be shut down...

MB here. I would have zero problems with you asking me this and would have my DH show you the program's he's installed/the walls he's set up. Most of his explanations go over my head. I wouldn't want to be worried about who can access my child's feeds so why would I be annoyed that her nanny wanted to ensure the same thing?

I would absolutely not work in a home where I was being filmed. Even if the family offered me full disclosure, I just wouldn't do it. And most esp. if I had my child with me.

It would just open myself and my child up to too many sickos out in the world OP and set myself up for too much harm.

Didn't you see the Yahoo! story a month ago? A nanny was being watched by a complete stranger on the baby monitor and she suddenly heard a voice and freaked out. Thankfully he wasn't a sicko, he jokingly made a comment to her about something like, "Don't forget to feed the baby..." or along those lines...but as the article stated, he could have been anyone, he could have seen or heard anything, etc.

Anytime anything electronic is used like this, it is vulnerable to hackers who are always one step ahead of the game.

For a family to put a nanny in such a situation is just mean to me.

Sure, they compare it to having cameras in their offices, etc. But it is much different when a nanny works alone in a private home vs. a corporate office.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

Duh.

Ask it!

When I got hired I asked if they have nanny cams and they said no. However I will never know for sure since they could have lied. So in my contract it says in the event of video cameras being used, I do not conset to any footage of me being shared with anyone to include social media etc. The contract also said the employers agree not to share footage of me with anyone.

Just ask how secure the camera is and who has access to see the live feed.
At most it would be the parents, maybe the grandparents (who love to see grandchildren running around!).
Most are just live feeds, quite secure via online accounts, no one is paying for recording, and if they are it is wiped out monthly.
Since you allege you have worked before with nanny cams in the house and been fine with it, these should be simple questions and reassuring answers.

Wow if you only knew how the world really worked you would be shocked. Also, no "hacker" has the desire to watch the nanny as she watches Maury.

You are the one who needs to wake up to reality.
