What is an appropriate hourly rate for a part-time nanny caring for one 4-yr old child, two afternoons per week in northern Virginia?
Anonymous
Minimum $25 an hour since it's not full time

$12-15.

I'd hire a high school kid rather than a nanny, and offer $10 an hour.

On this forum it is either $5 and hour and she'll wash your car or $75 an hour and you have to give her a manicure/pedicure.

Ask your friends to recommend a sitter and ask her/him what her rate is. If it is too much find another and ask the same.

Because high school students are known to be responsible.
Theyre also SUPER reliable!

And very mature and CPR trained. Thank God they never text and are always watching your child.

I cannot use a high school student. I need the nanny to pick up my child from preschool at noon 2 days per week and watch DC until the end of the work day (~5:00).

So true.

Get a few names, OP, and ask their rate. Or put an ad in care.com and ask the good applicants rate.

You will never get a straight answer here.

I would say $15 an hour. A nanny who gets out early from another job, would probably be your best candidate. If you have a neighborhood listserv, you can post the hours you need. I'm sure you'll get some responses.

This is why people don't take nannies seriously.

I was a super responsible and super reliable babysitter when I was in high school. I babysat for every kid in a three-block radius to my house, plus walked someone's dog every weeknight. I babysat from 12-33, and never once needed to call 911.

I'm so sorry, OP, that you are hearing from all the very bitter nannies and trolls on this board who are not providing helpful information.

Normal nanny rates for one child in DC are $15-17/hr. It is true that you may have to pay a little more if you have them PT and doing things like driving or tutoring. In that case, maybe $16-18/hr tops.

You will find many excellent candidates at that price point. If you only require a HS student as a mother's helper, you can find many at $12-15/hr.

Lucky you. You may have been a good sitter, but you were a child. You lacked the experience and judgement that it takes to handle a true emergency.

Yes, because nobody on an anonymous board would dare represent themselves as something they're not.
