These people want their very young children to get outside every single day no matter what the weather is. Kids are ages 9 months and 2 1/2. The parent feels that since they loved being outside all the time as a child, their kids should be the same way. I am trying to do as they ask but with our harsh winters it is turning out I'm having to try to bundle them up like crazy, and even then I can only manage to stay out for 15-20 minutes before being overcome with cold...I can't imagine what the baby must be feeling it's been below 30 degrees F for several weeks (colder with windchill) and we have still be playing outside as they ask. I am more than happy to take the kids outside but im not sure this is safe. The older child often says he is "frozen." And to top it off his parents lost his gloves and have yet to buy new ones! (Their exact words were "he can do without gloves for now").

| So stay outside for 15 min and call it good. Do that a couple times a day. |
|
I take my charges outside everyday, too, but I make sure they are dressed warmly. Do shorter stints outdoors - 20 to 30 minutes is enough - a couple times a day. And move around with the toddler.
I grew up in Minnesota - we all played outdoors for hours when it was much colder than it has ever gotten since I moved here. |
| Op here. It is good to know thst others do the same. I will definitely feel s little better about taking them out then |
|
If you have a carrier, bundle up the baby and wear him/her. Run around with the toddler. And keep the sessions short.
Kids all over the world, in much colder climates than DC, play outside. It is healthy for them to get into the fresh air and out of stale, heated homes. |
| As a nanny, I go nuts on days I have to stay inside all day! I make sure my charges are dressed for whatever weather and get out with them. Bundle them up in the stroller together with extra blankets and take a walk! Tell them it's a sleigh ride! |
|
I'm not a big fan of under 30 degrees for kids that small. Mostly because the effort to get them all bundled isn't worth the actual activity time.
But as others have said it is doable, just do shorter trips and keep active. The biggest issue is their refusal to buy the toddler appropriate winter wear. WTF! I wouldn't go for that. No hat and no gloves. No outside. Period. |

As a professional, it would be completely irresponsible, if I took children out in those temperatures insufficiently dressed.
If they are properly bundled, I'd take them out for ten minutes in those below freezing conditions, especially with a baby. Are these children ever sick? If so, we know why. |
As a professional you should know by now that no one gets sick from the cold. Even hypothermia isn't an illness. |
This is a great idea! Not OP, but thanks! |
You don't get sick from being cold. You get sick from germs. Please tell me you know this. |
| I'd go nuts indoors all day and so would my fifteen-month-old charge. He grabs his shoes when he wants to go out and heads for the door (very cute when he's just in his diaper). Buy your charge mittens and expense it back to the parents. |
| OP my DD goes out in all weather except pouring rain and blizzard like snow. We have 2 large dogs to walk so its not a choice. Do you run any errands for them? Stop by the dollar store and by a couple of pairs of mittens/gloves, hopefully they will reimburse you and be appreciative. |

Where so you that it's 30f below?
DC gets below freezing (32F) once inawhile. Layers, hats, mittens, the bunting or blankets in the stroller. Double pants or snow pants if walking and go! |
| My Latin American nanny complains all the time about rain or temps below 40... sigh. |
