I think a nanny who is getting paid to stay home should social distance. It's the least she can do for the privilege of being employed during the pandemic and not having to actually work. I'm not sure how the family could be sure she is doing so though. |
That’s ridiculous |
How so? We are facing a global health crisis. Have you seen the news lately? |
Oh please. Nanny normally makes $1k while working. Nanny is offered the choice to work or be paid off, knowing she’ll get more to not work? That’s insane. |
I know it’s crazy too when I thought I understood that people get $600 in addition to their states unemployment money? Still not sure I understand that .... $600 more a week? So if you’d get $500 in unemployment everybody gets $1100 now for 20 weeks? Crazy |
Unemployment is for people who are let go. Considering the fact that the entire country is battling a pandemic it would be very difficult to find a new job. Could you live off $500/week in Washington, DC? Think about it.
No one is given the choice to work or collect unemployment. They have to be let go. People who quit their jobs are not eligible. |
Has anyone actually filed for unemployment and already started receiving the extra $600 a week ( or know anyone that has)? |
I don't know. I am a nanny. I refused to be paid while not working. I am just not comfortable taking the money in this situation. I am legal/on books, so plan on applying for unemployment. Staying home and resting for a change. I was paid quite a lot though and was able to save. |
"People who quit their jobs are not eligible. "
That's not true. We were told to stay home and shelter in place, or protect ourselves if living with underlying health conditions, so we had no choice but to quit, and yes we still can apply. |
Let us know how that goes |

I’m the PP who is paying our nanny. Have you heard how hard it is to even secure unemployment right now? I want her to be continuously paid. We will re-evaluate if we need to. But this break is temporary. |
People paying the nanny during their quarantine are good people. Thank you. |
We pay our Nanny and told her to stay home. I want her back more than ever now that I have been home for more than 3 weeks. My DH suddenly thinks she needs a substantial raise as he has come to appreciate what she actually does during the day. |
You pay me only my half my salary and you're looking for a new nanny. |
