That said - I’ve never nannies for twins and a toddler before. I think you were right in asking one of the parents to stay home due to the sheer work load and wanting the well-kids to stay away from the sick one.

Nannies vary on this question. I am firmly in the camp that cares for the child no matter what. Other nannies I respect refuse to care for contagious kids. Only you can decide which camp you’re in.

Hope you never have to use up “your” sick leave, while you recover from job induced illnesses.

PP with unlimited sick leave. Anyone can negotiate for more sick days. It’s just a question of what you are willing to give up to get it.

The parents that take this as a given are simply selfish, inconsiderate + not too bright.

Or can’t take off work..

Why did you quote “your”?

I have never once used up all my sick days. I haven’t missed a day of work due to illness in over two years and during that time my charges have been sick. I’m healthy and have good hygiene.

+1. Why did she put your in quotes?

In my personal opinion when they are that sick they need mommy & daddy snuggles. I am more then going to get it if I am being the on le caring for them. Then parents will need to take off work anyway. Why not take it off when their kids are sick.

You’re not listening. Some parents have very, very limited time off (including sick days), and they can’t afford to take off unless THEY are sick. Kids get sick a lot when they’re little. That’s why they hire a nanny.

They should have thought of this prior to having children!

The nanny should have thought about what the job entails before joining the profession!

Nanny here who has always taken care of charges when sick.

Nanny from above. I take care of my charges when they’re sick and the parents go to work. It’s a stomach virus not the Black Plague.

Never heard of job with unlimited sick leave.

I've occasionally picked up something the kids had. The parents were always extremely apologetic (even though it was not their fault) and never made me use PTO (or even my sick leave) if I had to miss work. I'm a nanny. I take my job seriously. Part of my job is to care for my charges when they are ill. I guess I'm lucky though. I take care of my families and they sure as heck take care of me.

Wise parents will never force the nanny to use up her personal sick leave if she got sick from the children.

That’s just common sense.

That makes no sense! What if the kids get sick from the nanny? Do the parents dock her pay?

Plus how often are you all sick that this is an issue? Pay more attention to personal hygiene and you won’t have to worry about your sick days.

-signed, a nanny who wasn’t sick once in over 1.5 years

I have unlimited sick days, because the presumption is that I will only take what I actually need (and it would be absurdly easy to figure out if I was taking advantage, since I live in). I normally take 0-3 per year, but I could take more if necessary. I choose to negotiate with the thought that I may need more, and I’m willing to be flexible in other ways to compromise.

We give our nanny unlimited sick leave.

And if this family gets “stomach bugs” frequently, you should look for food poisoning. Something is very wrong with a family that pukes that much.

This isn't actually true.

Stomach bugs are passed via particles of vomit or diarrhea. If the child picked it up at school, then there's no reason any virus germs would have been in the home.

That said, once the first child puked at home, all bets are off.

And for the record, unless every single surface of the home had been cleaned with a diluted bleach mixture, you could have been exposed to the bug for days after people stopped puking.
