I’m the OP.

I simply didn’t clean up after adults. I assume they eventually figured out they’d need to do it themselves.

I came back from break today and had a good chat with MB. All is well.

To the “lawyer” who drastically underpaid her nanny. If you aren’t a troll, you are incredibly cheap. No one can live on $14 an hour here. Even if you have hired a low skill/minimally educated nanny, she deserves a livable wage. I think she’s highly skilled if she can put up with the likes of you.

I’m a moderately educated nanny. I have a masters in social work and then realized I didn’t want to be a social worker. I make a lot more as a nanny and I’m much happier. Social work requires a masters and a large skill set but pays very poorly. There isn’t always a correlation between education, skill set and income. It’s not that simple.

My partner passed the bar two years ago and I’m still making a little bit more than her. She attended a Penn State law and was top of her class. As PP said, lawyers are aplenty here so they all aren’t going to make three figure from the gate. A good nanny can be a hard find. I know my worth, and I’m paid well. I know I can make only so much as a nanny, and my partner will end up making double my wage in the next five years.

But the “low skilled, uneducated nannies” troll bit is old.

1. I actually DO employee a nanny @ 14.00 in DC
2. It is factually true, your job profile does NOT require a degree, or really any education.
3. Most parents believe the more they pay the better service they get. You ride this fear, just like we do as lawyers
4. What scares nannies the most is the fear their job can quickly be outsourced to other high school students, or foreign workers.

I employ a nanny. I would never trust a high school student, no matter how conscientious, to set up a healthy routine for my baby, to comfort him to sleep, or to offer care suggestions. So my nanny need not be afraid of THAT competition. Most foreign workers, if they are legal and speak passable English, quickly integrate wit the rest of the English-speaking nanny market. They too want to make more money, not to make you happy.
