We don't take our nanny because it's easier to hire someone locally for a few hours. We couldn't afford an on-call person for the whole time, and once you add up the travel expenses + extra stipend for being away, even if we don't use additional hours than her usual schedule, it's still cheaper to pay someone by the hour while paying the nanny to take the week off back home. I know that's been a bummer for our current nanny who would have loved to travel with us, but paying her regular salary + occasional OT is all we can manage.

Yes it comes to over $400 a day. It comes to between 750-850 / day. (Not giving exact number as I don’t need to share my hourly rate).
Like I said this was all discussed in the interview, as we travel frequently (at least every other month).

It’s not my vacation, it’s work for me. When I go on vacation it’s totally kid free (on purpose)

There certainly are nanny employers who can well afford the $800/day, but not most of them. The best nannies need only one.

The challenge is that there is only one best nanny and one best employer, hope you find each other, however you make that determination. The rest of the nannies and employers will have to make some compromises.

One of the purposes of a vacation is to have quality time with your children. Bringing a nanny negates this.

I can have quality time with my children when the nanny is there! True quality time with DH and our kids separately and as a family. I can give my older child our undivided attention while nanny has the baby. We can cuddle on the beach with the baby while nanny has our older child in kiddie splash and the playroom. Mostly, DH and I can sleep!!!

Seriously, PP, don’t knock it until you tried it. Nanny makes it a vacation! Without her it is a trip with the kids.

I can see how this would enhance a vacation for some parents, and I have done this with APs. I don't think too many would be willing to spend an additional $6000-10000/week on it for the privilege of having a nanny along (once you add in nanny's extra travel fees, OT, transportation, accommodations, extra food, and nanny's salary*). *And if it's not a vacation week that counts toward the nanny's vacation, there's that issue as well. (i.e. might be easier for the parents to care for the kids on vacation than find substitute care while working.)
