+1 We are getting our nanny an IPad, too -- and her year-end bonus.

Even though this is very difficult coverage wise we are letting her use all 40 hrs PTO at once ( which she has not accrued). Plus she’s just been just OK. Would she really be expecting a bonus in this situation?

You are making a HUGE mistake. I do not allow employees to use vacation time they haven't accrued, ever.

Don’t be surprised if she doesn’t come back.

We give a large Christmas bonus and a few personal gifts that run $150-200. I like to give a “warm” personal gift like cozy high quality pajamas and slippers, cashmere gloves or scarf, flannel sheets, gorgeous throw, etc., in colors and design I know she’d like plus a beautiful Christmas floral decoration and a dark chocolate assortment since she enjoys them.

Lovely, PP. I love the "warm" concept - very symbolic and useful!

$2,500 (cash, in an envelope, not taxed) and a nice gift, haven't figure out exactly what yet. One year we did concert tickets, one year was a necklace she had mentioned, one year was an iPad.

Nanny here and I am always intrigued by these nannies who happen to have mentioned that they want a particular necklace or handbag. My nanny family always get me gifts and only maybe twice ever in 10 years of birthdays and holidays have any of them actually guessed something that I wanted, but apparently I have not been dropping sufficiently obvious hints. Here’s what I actually want for Christmas this year:
Cash so that I can get better presents for my niece and nephew
A gift card to LL Bean so that I can buy some new outdoor gear to stay warm when chasing my toddler charges around outside
Gift card for a pedicure, but only at “my” salon ( my guess is that my nanny family would have no idea that I even like
pedicures)
A gift card to REI so that I can buy some more camping gear to take my kids camping again in the summer
I am spending New Year’s with my former nanny kids up near Niagara Falls, and I would love a hotel room overlooking the falls so that we could spend the actual night of New Year’s eve there overlooking the water (I am saving up for this one, but my guess is that I will not have enough in time).

I would like to get this too. I guess this board is for MBs with very high household incomes and not me or my kid's nanny. Most of my salary goes to the nanny. Neither I nor she will be lucky to get a holiday bonus (although we are getting her a very nice gift).

This is very generous but certainly not the norm.

There are 3 kinds of lower-earning nannies:
1) crappy nannies who are apid what they arw worth
2) great nannies who don’t realize what they are worth
3) great nannies who value another aspect of the position more than making lots of money. Sounds to me like you have the latter. Let her know how much you appreciate her and how important her impact is on your child. That is the best gift for any nanny!

I'm the PP. Our HHI is just under $400K. Our nanny is our biggest expense, and while we do feel the cost, she makes our lives infinitely easier and we really want to keep her. Once the last kid hits K, we'll be done, though, and will switch to aftercare at school because at that point we definitely can't justify the expense.

Starting in January, Ds' nanny will be taking some night classes towards her new career . It also happens to be my career

1. A gift basket filled with things she will need. Stethoscope, cheat sheet cards, coffee, a coffee mug, gift card to her school cafeteria
2. Microsoft Surface (she loves using mine and has commented that she wants go get one for school)
3. $1450 cash bonus.

Neither DH or I get a bonus so it's a little bit of a stretch ...but we love her and I'm very proud of her as this has been a dream of hers for years.

Round it up to $1500 PP, otherwise that sounds cheap.

Pp, I think it sounds very generous, but you sound very jealous.
