Nanny here.
You are wrong : gift cards are not impersonal. They allow you to get what you really want
Giving something to wear is tricky, I hate receiving something to wear, I'm picky when it comes to clothes.

The bonus is really nice. And coming from your DD, it could be a framed picture of them together or even just a drawing and a card where you thank her.

I know my children's nanny very well - she has been with us for 12 years. My oldest DD knows the exact MacBook she wants and this is what we are getting her for Christmas along with her holiday bonus. I can't wait to give it to her!!

Please just get her a gift card to Macy's or a jewelry store then. Don't make her go through the hassle of returning something that may not be her taste and the awkwardness she will feel at having to accept a gift she doesn't like.

I am planning to give a nice gift and no bonus. Our nanny started in September and she is taking a 3 week trip over the holidays. Even though this is very difficult coverage wise we are letting her use all 40 hrs PTO at once ( which she has not accrued). Plus she’s just been just OK. Would she really be expecting a bonus in this situation?

No, not is she just started with you and you are giving her her PTO in advance - she has no business expecting a year end bonus.

She should be more than just "okay", PP. Maybe think about finding a better nanny.

- signed, a Nanny.

For a gift, we are thinking about getting our nanny a Rumba (she really wants one)!! And her bonus.

Is the Rumba to clean your house? I would not give that as a gift to her. Give it as a gift to the MB and they can both be happy about it.

Better to give one's nanny something small than a cleaning appliance IMO.

PP here and we already have a Rumba and nanny really wants one for her house! BTW our nanny does no housekeeping at all by mutual agreement. She just sees the Rumba working in our house and wants one.

How much of a bonus are you giving her?

OP here. We always give one week's pay tax free.

As a nanny I always appreciate a bonus (whatever I deserve, which is usually a weeks pay, maybe 2) and a picture of my NKs or sweet card.

I’ve had one NF who new me well enough to give me gifts I really enjoyed.

One MB was very sweet and gave me a designer purse. Wasn’t my taste but I really appreciated it and knew it cost top dollar.

With gifts, it’s sentiment not price tag.

Do you mean that you just hand her cash or you make it so her take-home is the amount she would get, if not for taxes?

Yes. She earns $1,065.00 gross - before taxes and deductions. We give her $1,100 in cash (bills) in an envelope.

You are making a HUGE mistake. I do not allow employees to use vacation time they haven't accrued, ever.

This is a great way to handle a bonus.
