My very first nanny asked for $8 an hour, which was under minimum wage. We paid her $10. This was in an extremely low COL part of the country, though, and it was her first nanny job, just out of high school.

Two years ago. And by extremely low COL, I mean that over half the population is under the poverty line. It's a good wage for the area, especially with no work experience.

Let me spell out what I (immediate PP) stated.

A nanny share of $11-12/hour ($5.50-6/hour per family) is extremely low for the DC area. $11-12/hour per family would be slightly above market, but still acceptable.

DC area nanny share are competitive at $18-20/hour ($9-10/hour per family) to start, some nannies are willing to accept $15/hour ($7.50/hour per family), but it's not competitive.

Is that clear now?
