I'm a nanny I make rougly 25k per year. I'm in my early 30's I have blue cross blue shield private health insurance and my monthly premiums are 130 per month. I have a 5k deductible. I can afford my insurance just fine. I decided to keep my insurance once obamacare happened because insurance through the exchange was more expensive. I anticipate my premiums to go up this year and I do worry that one day I won't be able to afford health insurance but at least for now my rate is reasonable.

$5k deductible is "reasonable" wow. Insane in my view.

Very reasonable considering any major surgery consisting of a 1-3 day hospital stay will cost you around 50k. 5k is much more reasonable

You are either married, have family money, or live in a VERY low cost of living area.

Obamacare is private insurance, Idiot. The ACA just forces you to get private insurance and has exchanges (all private) where you can enroll with other people for reduced rates.

We know that dumbass. The ACA jacked up premiums and jacked up deductibles. It fucking sucks.

NO IT DID NOT. Christ, you are so stupid! Look at the rates before and after. You are dead wrong and clearly one of the freeloaders who never had healthcare insurance before.

I can't believe that you are young enough to be a nanny but old/stupid enough to watch Fox "news". You are truly a rare combination of stupid.

Premiums did go up for a lot of people. It's due to a lot of factors, but a big one is because they have to accept everyone and can't discriminate based upon preexisting conditions, etc. I think that is a great thing and support the ACA, but to deny that premiums increased for lots of people in the middle is ignorant.

I've always had private insurance as a nanny, so it's a little over 10 years now. My premium almost doubled after the ACA for the same coverage, but with a higher deductible. In 10 years I've had my premiums increase slightly from one year to another, but never double.

Insurance companies raised premiums before the ACA, too, sometimes quite dramatically. Assuming you were able to get insurance at all. And of course, the companies are going to blame this on the ACA, because it's a convenient scapegoat.

If you would have read my entire reply, you would see that I acknowledged this. I've had private health insurance for over 10 years. Yes my premiums have increased from year to year, sometimes somewhat dramatically if you looked at the percentage. However, I've never had my premium double like it did after the ACA.

Honestly I've learned that health insurance premiums varies dramatically depending upon what state you live in. Unfortunately I live in a state where the premiums are very high, so it just is what it is. It's expensive, but I believe health insurance is essential.

A nanny making 25k a YEAR and spending $130 a month on health insurance can't afford even $5,000 if she gets hurt and end up in the hospital for 1-3 days. She will still be bankrupt. Spending that $130 a month is a waste.

Do what I do. Don't pay the deductibles. Nothings ever made it to my credit report. Don't know why and don't care.
