This is so that my end time is respected as a hard limit. 1 minute late, becomes 5 minutes late, becomes 10 minutes late, and you're forgetting to even round. This is how it works in most hourly jobs. You round up always.

My nanny comes 5 minutes late all the time. So if I get home at 5:02pm I put down 5. same for 5:15, 5:30 or 5:45pm.

Just put it in the contract, if nanny wants to nickle dime you it all goes around/comes around anyhow.

I am the nanny that you quoted. I have been late 1 time in 2 years. I am routine 10 minutes early, giving my MB/DB time to finish getting ready unecumbered, for free. All that I ask in return is that they respect my time in the evening by not walking in at the very last minute allowable. Why do you all feel entitled to be late without consequence? Can someone please explain that?

Didn't think so.

Because that's the way my hospital work goes and that can be the way traffic in DC goes. My nanny of 5 years is mature enough to realize, understand and be fine with that as are we. We call each other or text if something is truly late or leaving late as a heads up.
Have fun nickel and diming your way through employers!

Being late sometimes is fine. Expecting it to be for free is not. Her deciding to let it go is fine. You making it your policy to give yourself a grace period, that your nanny did not okay (as is the case for OP) is NOT okay. It is entitled. Have fun being a cheap asshole!

I am the OP.

I thought about this all day and decided that we should pay her 20 guaranteed hours a week except when she requests time off or we are on vacation (will pay her 10 hours when we are away). She has another PT job so I know we are not her only source of income, and we have been flexible as we hired her even though she is going away in April for 3 weeks (we really appreciated she was upfront about this). She is very experienced and hardworking with a great reputation in our area, and she babysat for us a couple of times in the past and we were so impressed with her. I told her she doesn't have to work until 6 if there's nothing to do and a parent can take over, but we think it's only fair to pay her until then as we might need her to work up to 6 fairly regularly. We want her to stay with us until the end of the school year and possibly return to us in September, so I thought it best to pay a little more than we had originally planned in order to make sure we have the cover we need and show her that we appreciate her and respect her time.
