01:30, you're saying words, and they're about piercings, but they don't answer the question at all.
What does "low income" look like and why is there shame in being low-income? BTW, I'm a former nanny/occasional babysitter turned teacher. I'm the PP with a hoop in her nose and I'm helping to mold lots of children. You don't always get a choice

Please tell me you did not have the nerve to procreate? Seriously, the world's quota for prejudice, classist assholes has been met and you can go be something else now. |

| I'm sorry but I just think it's an awful decision. If I see someone with facial piercings (tongue, nose, eyebrow..whatever), I judge them. Sure some may think that's wrong but I do. I just don't understand why anyone would want to do that. Also, the majority of the people that I see with these piercings are very "trashy" looking in general. Even if they aren't, I still assume that they don't come from a very nice area or have a nice job, etc. I just don't get it. When you are 50+ years old, why are you going to want all of these holes in your face? Same with tattoos. Just don't. |
Most people don't even notice the tiny stud in my nose on most days. I've had multiple people attempt to wipe the "lint" off my nose. It really is that small. And you realize that holes close? If my stud falls out at night, I have to force it back in the next morning. Its just really not that big of a deal, and as this older backwards generation moves on, there will be less and less people judging someone as arbitrary as piercings and tattoos. I have them because I like them, and my tattoos mean something to me. Its no different than other modifications to your appearance. |
I can think of someone else who thought this way: he put 6 million people into concentration camps to prove just how morally upright he was. |
I am a former nanny, teacher and soon to be Nurse Practitioner. I came from an upper middle class background, attended an Ivy League school and will make well in the 6 figures when I finish my degree (one that happens to allow me to write prescriptions, diagnose illness and provide primary care to neonates). I also have tattoos from my shoulders to wrists on both arms and a nose piercing that will all look as amazing when I am 50 as they do now. Pretty trashy, though, eh? |
Oh no, how dare they not come from a nice area! Yes, let's judge over shit like that. Seriously, people like you are way worst than any 'trashy' individual with -omg the horror!!!!-........a tattoo or piercing. |

Instead of bashing people back who say piercings and tattoos are trashy, why don't you try to educate them? I'm from a generation where the only people who got tattoos were military or motorcycle gang types. Piercings were for Tower Record employees or those into punk rock and then the Goths started doing it.
To me, I still don't understand why anyone would want to do that to themselves. I have heard all the things from it is a way of expressing yourself to being an individual. But I also see too many people who don't really think about what they are doing and have regretted the piercings or tattoos. And now all the bad tattoo shows and websites have popped up. And more than one person has expressed that they wish they hadn't done it, especially the guy I know with a tattoo of Mickey Mouse giving someone the finger. So, instead of bashing someone like me, educate me on why doing this to yourself is such a great idea. |
Multiple posts on this thread have attempted to do just that, and they have been completely ignored because a lot of people with your opinion are not interested in facts or education, they are too married to their opinion. I have already stated that it'd be near impossible for a baby to grab my piercing, and that I wear one during the week that is so small that most don't even notice it. I have it because I think it's pretty, its pretty unobtrusive, and I know it will close if I decide I no longer want it. I have a relatively visible tattoo on my upper back and neck that I designed myself (I am also an artist) and it was inspired by the abuse that I endured as a child. I was emancipated at 16, and decided I wanted the tattoo around then. I made the design and mulled it over for 2 years. Once I reached a point of stability, and could afford it, I had the tattoo done. Yes there are people who make thoughtless decisions about piercings and tattoos, but the same could be said about all aspects of life couldn't it? It seems like a silly reason to judge the entire population. My tattoo means a great deal to me and it always will. It's also much prettier than the emotional scars, which will also always be with me unfortunately. |
Even if someone made a poor decision about a tattoo the logic just does not add up. Are you suggesting a parent with a tattoo should have their kids put into the foster-care system because they must also be bad parents? Your idea that decisions about adorning your body are somehow correlated to your childcare ability would lead to thousands of people being unfit parents, grandparents, and care providers. |
Thank you. I appreciate you being honest about why you got a tattoo. I am sorry you had to endure childhood abuse. You are right, the emotional scars never completely go away, no matter how we like to cover them up. I hope they continue to fade away. |
I never said poor tattoos equal a poor ability to take care of children. I simply was being honest in how I was raised to view tattoos and piercings and am asking people to educate me. Yes, everyone makes bad decisions, but not all of them lead to bad consequences. The frustrated parent who shakes their baby one time and the baby ends up with shaken baby syndrome will have vastly different consequences than a person getting a tattoo one night while they are drunk. And please note that I don't believe everyone who gets a tattoo or piercing is making a bad decision. Doing something to your body is something everyone has to decide for themselves. |

Ignorance abounds in DC.
Shocking, breaking news, I know. |
| Strangers can judge me all they want. I have piercings and am not low income. It's 2015. Really, your attitude is disgusting. |
