Nanny driving kids in her own car RSS feed

PP, not everyone who has a nanny can afford an extra car. If a nanny is willing to accept the 'liability' that comes with using her own vehicle, why so much rage? My MB and DB treat me extraordinarily well but there is no way they could buy an extra car for me to use...

15:14 if you are a nanny I hope this story helps and forgive my tone
If you are an mb no apology given unless you have a nanny car

I offered to bike to work so our nanny could drive our mini van with the kids. She said she felt more comfortable driving her own car and so we agreed to pay the IRS mileage rate. This was her preference, not ours.

Nannies I'm sorry. But I hate when people take advantage and try to convince you that it is a good thing..
Listen I don't know what your employers have or don't have all I'm telling nannies is to be aware.
And the mb's started quoting mileage and they pay gas...but I was saying that Isn't the only things nannies should consider

If you offered to bike to allow her to drive your car that's great. I commend you, because you are not making her vehicle part of whether you want her or not...some said they wouldn't' t hire otherwise...
That in my book is using what the person own for your benefit

That happened to my sister who is a nanny and her db said they couldn't afford a nanny car. Her car slid on ice taking the her charge to playgroup sing-along and hit a tree. Her car was old so it wasn't worth fixing the damage. She takes 2 buses to work and db bought a nanny car

If it is a requirement to drive for a job, you agree to that requirement when you take the job. The IRS rate for reimbursement is common in most industries as it is fair compensation for gas and wear and tear. Most industries that require driving do not have company cars.

If you want the job, you meet the job requirements. If you don't, then look for a non driving job.

Pretty simple, really.

Wait. I think pp has a point. She's just too angry for some of us to take her seriously. Shouldn't her mb help her buy another car? The Nanny who lost the stroller at the park the mb's were saying to take it out of her paycheck and the other nanny who set the stain in the blouse had $79 taken out of her paycheck. So how do we ask to add that in our contract?
Anyone knows please let me know

Isn't that what insurance is for? It pays for the current value of the car if it's totaled.

I have learned my lesson. My last employers did not have an extra car for me to drive their kids, so I had to use my own car. They paid gas but not miles used and one day I went to school to pick the kids up and the bumper of my precious car was destroyed! No notes, no one saw how that happened, I was there doing my job! Result: the parents didn't care, I think they should have paid at least half of the damage.

It can go either way, just depends on the family. The family I nanny for has a 3rd car just for me to use but I actually use my own car even if it does cost me a bit in gas. I'm just much more comfortable driving my own car. I was actually in an accident where someone hit me, they were 100% at fault so I didn't have to pay my deductible but the family offered to pay it before knowing I didn't have too.

Anonymous wrote:Five top reasons NANNIES IT IS IN YOUR BEST INTEREST to drive. A nanny car

#1...no liability to you in case of an accident
#2...if anyone gets hurt and file a claim against the insurance carrier it won't matter to you therefore no increase in payments.
#3...at the end of the week your car won't look like a dumpster
#4..less wear and tear
#5...if the car gets totalled whether your fault or another party..you can still drive to work and be on time..

#1 and 2 are not true. If you are at fault in an accident, it will be on your driving record, which is tied to your license number, not the policy number.

Before becoming a nanny I worked as a consultant with a federal agency on a long term contract. I traveled to one site each week, parked my car in the parking lot, and drove it home after. All highway miles. For that type of work the IRS milage reimbursement was fine.

Now, if I use my car for work I have spilled milk, potty accidents, crowds at the zoo parking lot, stop and go traffic through the city, etc. The risks are far greater than when I was the sole occupant in my vehicle. More, most of the wear and tear would come from the job use of the vehicle because I work 11 hours a day - there is just not much time for me to go anyplace. My weekend use is fairly limited tool. Therefore, the family would have to put a lot on the table to make it worth my while.

I had a nanny friend who was in a really bad wreck while driving her nanny kid. She had to take a loan out for anew car so she could continue working.

yes it would put points on my license but it is alot more if it was your vehicle and your insurance plus points.
I would settle for the points alone thank you get much.
Anyway I would never take a job if there was no nanny car because the employers don't have to purchase an expensive vehicle a second hand $4000-$6000 would be great and I would never take on a car loan to convenience them. If I had gotten in an accident with my car taking their kids around I wouldn't purchase another until they got one..they have the option of firing me but it would prove to me what was more important to them. The fact is they are in a better position than most of us to afford a car payment, so to me I would never take on that extra expense for their benefit..
