Love the way you worded this! I do get paid $11 an hour now as a summer nanny only, get gas paid for, and any activities I do with the kids. I'm happy with this arrangement! However once I graduate college I will have a degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Spanish, and all the above "certifications" the other PP posted about. I will definitely not be accepting anything less than $15 an hour if I continue to nanny on the side of teaching.

Where are you? In the DC area, high school and college-aged kids get 15. an hour. |
lol..uh no they don't. |
What is it you are disagreeing with? I said I made $15/hour as a 19 year old college student, and wouldn't accept less than that now. PP will be finishing school, and also said $15 will be her minimum. You're right college students get $15/hour. Adults with experience and degrees should make more. |
LOLOLOL That is great! High five! highly agree lol

I 100% agree with the author of the post!!!!!!!!!!!! This is so very very very saaaaad. And everyone who disagrees is just like every other cheap ass parent who tries to get a nanny to do 15+ dollar an hr. work, for 11 or under. And they say" and guess what, we'll pay you cash!! which really means, we won't even pay you enough to pay into your SS! They're on care.com or sittercity or what the hell ever, because they don't even want to pay an agency!
Note: If you can work at McD's for 7.25, which yes is a lot of work-I used to work in fast food, but your truly getting paid for the value that you're delivering. If I'm caring for the physical, mental and emotional health of your child, and being your housekeeper, 11 dollars/hr will not be enough to for me to keep up a lifestyle to even be able to take care of your kids! Car, rent, clothes, FOOD! omg. |
What is it you agree with ? I'm the person who wrote I make 10 per hr. I've been at my job for 2 years and love it ! I'm in my 30's I have a college degree and 12 years of experience. You really think every nanny around here makes 20 plus per hr ? |
oops, I'm not blog saavy. I am shocked! I used to make 10/hr at other jobs, and that is not decent money! I'm 25, have way less than 12 years of experience, and I am paid at least 15/ hr-although I did settle for 12 once because the family was so nice, and the position was easy. How on earth do you afford living and a college education!? I never obtained a degree from college, but I did attend for two years-which was really tough and I could not settle for 10 an hr. But I guess it's just simple economics, people pay this, because people like you are willing to accept the positions. I'm still shocked at how you're able to do it-and I do agree that in a way, that degree is worthless if you're getting paid that. You can do better!! |

I know I can do better but the family I work for lives within 10 min of my house. I'm married and my husband makes a good living. I work to put money away for my child's college education. My whole paycheck goes to this !
My college education was paid for by my parents. |
I'm actually in the Midwest area. I don't have any idea what the normal pay is for this area. |
In that case your numbers make more sense. Thanks for the clarification. |
Exactly. |
