OK I get this. When it is very hot during the summer I avoid getting gas while the kids are in the car. Its too hot to leave the windows up and the fumes are not pleasant. Occasionally there is no choice so I roll down the windows on the opposite side and try to pull up at a pump that doesn't have another gas lane on that side.

I assume that either the nanny provides a car and if so then its not unreasonable to ask that she fills up without the kids unless its an emergency. If she's driving the employer's car then its easily solved by OP making sure the tank is full.

She dropped the ball on not getting gas before work. She doesn't get to run her personal errands on the clock
