If you go to the park or library on a weekday, you may see for yourself. Often you'd be hard pressed to find any nanny who is a native English speaker. You don't believe this is related to the low wages?

On the contrary, I believe it is because most poorer Americans are happier living off welfare and sitting on the corner, drinking and ignoring their own kids. The immigrants on the other hand, are happy for an honest day's work regardless of how tiring, unglamorous or dirty the work is. When people complain that immigrants take jobs from Americans I know it is total BS because white, black, asian or hispanic, once you're a second generation american or later, even though all you have is a high school education, you're too entitled to do anything if it isn't paying a huge amount and allows you to sit on your ass while making said money. Look at construction, landscaping, housekeeping, back of the house restaurant, ALL hardworking immigrants.

You are completely delusional. "Unskilled" (not) immigrants ALWAYS are paid the lowest wages, often less than minimum wages. They are afraid to report their abusive employers. Everyone knows that.

the people who are saying $20 an hour are sitters themselves.

BTW, I know some nursing students who would take $15 an hour.

I know some med students who would take $15 an hour. Not that any FT student has much free time for PT jobs. Sure, we all know people who've done it. But then again, lots of students can't even finish college in four years without any PT jobs.

OP in Rockville for 1 kid you are in the $12-$15 range for someone with 5+ years experience, good english, good references and ability to drive. No one in Rockville is paying anywhere near $17-$20. Don't fall for the crazy nannies.

This poster seems to have examined the tax returns and pay stubs of every nanny and nanny employer in Rockville. I love her dilegence!
Now, for all the Rockville domestic workers off the books, how did she verify their hourly wages?

She may be on to something....

$12-$15 is a good rate for Rockville. $15 -combined- for a nanny share is common out here.

One piece of advice is to ask in the initial screening phone call where the candidate would be commuting to every day. I had several candidates who lived south in VA down off 95 and some who lived on the eastern side of MD past DC. I was surprised that they hadn't really thought through what a nightmare commute this would have been. Several said it would still be fine but this would be an issue if bad weather were predicted or they found out later the commute was too bad.

There are a good number of nannies who live up in Gaithersburg, Germantown, Derwood, Wheaton etc. It works out better for everyone if the nanny has a shorter commute. The nannies coming from these area had better qualifications/looking for a lower rate to avoid driving all the way into DC.

What would you have to pay those far away more expensive nannies?

Dumb question. It doesn't matter. She can get quality childcare for reasonable market rates in her area. So can the OP.

Can I please apply for the position if you're still looking?

Over in the parents forum, they all know that caregivers who are experienced with newborns, earn 22-30 per hour. Just don't call yourself a "nanny", and double your hourly fees. Lol.
