Wealthy families can afford much more (and better) than the one jealous mb poster who constantly voices her anger on this forum.

OP has gone above and beyond for this family. Shame on them for dumping her like this. If one parent lost their job, they should be honest and say so.

There is nothing in the OP's post to show that she went above and beyond for the family. If she accepted a job requiring 65 hours a week, showing up 65 hours a week isn't going above and beyond. You are not doing someone a favor by accepting a job any more than they are doing you a favor by offering it. You are both adults. You accept the offer or turn it down. Up to you.

Also, what's with the shame on them for dumping her??? Every nanny knows that at some point their time with the family will end. At ages 4,6 and 8 this is the prime time for that to happen.

OP come to Boston there are plenty of doctors and professors with secure stable positions that will gladly pay you $15 for one child. I work 53hr at $20 for two children, and these are middle class families paying (not upper middle).

How are middle class parents paying you $55-60k / year after taxes, especially considering the crazy Boston real estate market? That equates to probably about $100k of one of their salaries. How exactly do you define "middle class"?

She didn't say "after taxes". Please come back after a refresher course in reading comprehension. You keep "misreading" posters and it's rather irritating. Do you do this everywhere you disagree?

Please remember that Federal govt. employees think they are entitled to free everything. Only in this area are nannies treated so shamefully and paid so poorly.

NP here. I did not read it "after taxes" but gross and am also wondering how a middle class family could afford it. PP, could you please tell us what income range you are defining as middle class?

Yea combined my employers make a little shy of 200k. But middle class in MA is different from middle class in most other parts of the country because cost of living and the job market is very different. I break Boston done into three different classes (other than the poor)

Working class: teachers, cops, firefighters, real state agents etc
couple would make a combined income of 80-150k and would typically use daycare or nanny share

Middle class: certain doctors, lawyers and ppl in finance etc
A couple would make a combined income of 150-250k

Upper middle class is everyone who makes more

Remember this is Boston and doesn't reflect the entire country. Many individuals here are highly educated, the cost of living is higher and so is the pay. You can find a nice two bedroom condo in the city for 400k if you search enough or you can move 5-15 miles outside the city and get a cute house. Boston is tiny and condensed so commuting isn't as terrible as so other cities. I live 5miles outside the city and my apt cost $1800 but I'm walking distance to the T which will get me into the city in 30mins or I can drive and get there in 15mins. So must families I come across really plan before they have kids because even daycare is going to cost you around 2k a month.

I left Boston last year and completely agree re: income brackets.

OP here. The parents that I work for are NYC business executives who make well over $100k/year. I spoke to my MB and she said that the reason they are cutting my OT is because they are looking to buy a summer home in the Hamptons for next year. I'm very frustrated because I have 2 roommates for my NYC apartment, which helps with rent and grad school bills are starting to come in for next semester. Its not my business about how they spend their money, but the smallest paycut hurts.

This story doesn't ring true to me.

Good luck, OP.

In that case OP, you should show them the IRS handout designating nannies as hourly household employees covered by the FLSA, thus entitling them to OT pay. Its not something optional they can just cut out. They can either a) reorganize their schedules so as not to need OT, b) hiring someone else to cover your OT, or c)reduce your hourly rate that comes to a weekly amount they are okay with. None of these options sound great for you, so I'd tell start looking for a new job. Ask them if they can make the change effective in 30 days, and use tht time to secure a new job.

OP how on earth are you in grad school and working 65 hours a week? Not trying to doubt you, I am just baffled at how this is accomplished...

As someone who has worked outside the DC area, your statement that this this the only place where nannies are treated so shamefully and paid so poorly is completely untrue. While this area is not the highest paying nanny market, nannies in most areas do not make as much as DC area nannies. You are an ignorant spoiled child.

OP here. I go to grad school part time and I take online classes. It works with my schedule because I can get my classwork finished on weekends. It doesn't leave me with much free time, but I'm almost finished.
