letting nanny go--how to do it "humanely" RSS feed

All tools I do think she deserves some sort of explanation...we need someone who can do more house keeping, out Stasi on the kids schedule better, tutor and cook dinner...whatever it is. If it's her attitude then tell her. Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for a person is hurt their feelings so they understand how behavior X is affecting their work life.

No severance or notice if she is being fired for cause. Fire her on a Friday and let her say goodbye to the kids in your presence.

Changing the locks is just smart. No need for her to have access to your home after being fired.

Two weeks severance for a nanny that has been with you for a long time is fine, since you are letting her go for cause. I would let her know why - I would want to know. If you have to give her a review form or letter, that's better than nothing. Maybe next time she will keep on her game.

Tha day doesn't really matter, I think honesty is important, talk with her and say look we are letting you go , we are going to compensate and will approve unemployment if she needs it to survive while she finds a new job and a letter with good references if she was good that's fair! If you get fired from your job being a nanny or a boss it's hard , it hurts, but like my father said you can leave and they can let you go it's both ways and it's true , let her say good bye to your kids, because kids can be sad and confused so be fair !

If you need to change locks is because you never trusted her that's awfull is she a criminal who's going to get inside your home? Do they change locks in your office when they fire you? I have had bosses who have let me go and never heard of that you say goodbye this person loves your children I know it's a job but this job is mainly about trust and love!!!

There is a good how-to here that helped me out - touches on a few things I hadn't considered at the time.
