| Today was early out day for my charge which always leads to bad traffic. I got there early as usual yet there was no parking in the lot I usually park in. I drove around and still found nothing. I parked in the nearest neighborhood and there was no sign saying when street sweeping was. I parked next to a few other cars and ended up sprinting to school to get there on time. When we got back to my car there was a parking ticket on my windshield because of street sweeping. I knew today was street sweeping as it is at my work too but in my haste to not be late forgot. So now I'm wondering who should pay for the ticket. I feel like they should but maybe I should offer to split the cost? |
| I think you need to pay for it because they have no control over where you park. I had a similar situation in my previous job. The school is in a busy area in NW DC. After a parking ticket I asked the family to pay any tickets I got going forward, considering the parking situation. In the end, I wound up just driving their car so that it was less of a hassle. |
| Obviously you pay |
| You need to pay for the ticket. |
| MB here. We paid for the first ticket and told DS' nanny she would need to pay for any subsequent ticket. The first was an honest mistake though and I myself had parked in that spot without realizing I couldn't. I didn't get a ticket though an didn't realize there was no parking there until she came home with a ticket. |
| OP here, the only reason think the parents should pay is because I am early to work EVERY day as know parking is sometimes problem. I'm not paid for getting there early but still show up early so something like this doesn't happen. Also my charge is in kindergarten and has to be dismissed by the teacher to me, so if I'm late it's a big problem. My plan is to talk to my MB about it and let her know I will pay the ticket myself but that expect her to start paying me to show up early as parking is even more of problem now because the parking lot I park in is shared with the pool. Basically right now I feel like I'm being set up to either grata ticket or be late picking up their daughter. |
| MB here. We had a similar situation. However it was nanny's fault she parked where she shouldn't. The sign was visible. We decided to pay half of the ticket but it was our good will. |
This is not a good approach. Surely other parents are in this position to. Are you upset with other things with this family? |
|
I would not approach them that way. But, it is a problem that is outside of your control. You should present the problem as "I need to be at DC's school by X time to be on time and be able to park someplace where I won't get a ticket. Would you be interested in expanding my hours to cover X amount of time? If not, I will be forced to circle the lot until I can get a parking space and you may have to deal with the school on account of DC being late.
Present it from the facts, not from your personal feelings. People can dismiss you feelings too easily, even if they are legitimate. But they fact is they need to expand your hours or accept DC will be late. Getting tickets is not an option for anyone though. |
| YOU forgot. YOU made the mistake. Next time leave a bit earlier so you can find free parking. |
Agree with the first part of the wording, not the second Don't use "forced" or "you'll have to deal with the school". Just state the facts. With the pool now being open, parking is difficult and spaces are limited. If you have to keep circling to find a spot, you'll be late picking up DC and the school gets pretty annoyed with that. |
My apologies, I read your post wrong. If its pickup, not dropoff, then you need to get there earlier. |
Her point is they need to pay her to get there earlier. |
If it is pick up after school and she is already working then they are paying her to be there earlier. OP, are you only doing after school hours? If so then your point is legit. If you work all day then the issue is your time management. |
| How much earlier from your start time do you need to be there. That kind of changes my answer. |
