I have a very delicate question.... RSS feed

So today about 10 mins before MB was due home, and when me and her 3 year old had just returned from the park, I decided to be helpful and pull their recycling bins out of the garage to the bottom of the drive way. When i was caring the second one, I tripped, I heard a "POP" from my ankle, but I figured I just twisted it. I got up okay, but it hurt really bad. I kind of just leaned against my car and waited for MB to come home as the 3 year old did side walk chalk, I let her know I fell and she suggested I go home and elevate it, so I got in my car and tried to drive, it was near impossible, my right ankle hurt so bad. I eventually made it home.

Once home, I took some motrin and put some ice on it. It was swollen. After an hour of excruciating pain, I ended up in the ER.

The bad news is I fractured my Fibula. I can't put any weight on it for now. I have to go see an orthopedic doctor to see if I need surgery or just a cast. But I have NO insurance! But I am paid on the table via breed love and I remember when i first started she told me that breedlove made them purchase some insurance thing. Was this workers comp? Would I be eligible for this to help cover the wages im going to lose and cover the medical bills? Im not looking to rip anyone off or anything. I just dont want to drown in medical bills and be able to pay my rent.

She didnt seem so concerned when i texted her to tell her that I had broken it. She basically said "sorry to hear it, hope they gave you pain meds, let me know if you can't work, we are sleeping, ill check in in the morning."

How do i bring up the fact that this occured during my working hours? I dont want to step on any toes. if it helps, im in baltimore, so i dont know what the law calls for here.

You should have told her when she got home how it happened. I'm not sure about the workers comp thing. Perhaps log into Breedlove and see what you can find.

You should definitely discuss with your MB if it is worker's comp and the details of the policy to see if it covers your injury. While she likely has homeowner's insurance, it is unlikely to cover you since the fall did not result from negligence on their part. That said, you should check thoroughly your options.

If you aren't covered, seek a payment plan with the hospital and doctors. And get your own insurance ASAP! You are in a profession where it isn't always provided, so you need to sign up for the exchange to protect yourself from this kind of thing.

Good luck and take care.

I would contact breedlove first to see if you are covered in any way. Then you can talk to your mb about your options.

Op here,
I did let her know when she got home. I honestly thought I just twisted it, but when I got home it was badly swollen so my roommate took me to the ER.

I sent her a text this morning telling her we needed to contact the workers comp carrier because I need to see an orthopedist, and she hasn't gotten back to me. I'm in a splint until I can see the orthopedist to get a cast. I'll be able to move around much easier once I get a cast. But for now I'm stuck To a bed.

I kind of feel like she is avoiding me.

Why don't you have insurance?

because I cant afford it. Between rent, and a car payment (and no i dont own an brand new car, I drive a 2001 honda civic) and the expense of being a student, theres not much left. I did look into it, but it was almost $200 a month for a plan with a $6000 deductible...

Was this question really needed? Couldn't you have guessed...

I don't know.. This is tough.. You said you were trying to be helpful, they can say that wasn't part of your job description and won't be held accountable to pay

But it could just be an example of an employee going above and beyond. People do things all the time that arent in their job description.

I don't think it matter whether or not she has insurance this should be covered under worker's comp. If she was paying you legally I think they should probably have it. If not I would try to get their homeowners insurance to cover you. I'm sorry this happened to you OP, you could maybe talk to a lawyer to see what your options are in possibly suing them. If you do that though you may be out of a job. Do you have any friends or family that may be able to advise you? Keep us updated!

she JUST got back to me... which is weird because i was due at work at 7:30. All she said was that she was still looking for someone to care for her son, and she would be in touch later.

As far as I've been told, is that I most likely WONT need surgery, but I do need to get into a cast ASAP so that I dont injure it more. My aunt who is a nurse practitioner said that as soon as I can get into a cast, I'll probably be able to ditch the crutches and walk on it as it will be immobilized. Which means I can get back to work sooner. Right now im in a flimsy splint.

Seems to me shed be better off getting this worked out ASAP so I can get back to work. We've had a a pretty good relationship up until now. I don't make a lot or have benefits, but theyve generally been very nice to me, and I have enjoyed me job there.

Someone I babysit for on weekends is a doctor and I asked him what I should do, he works for a low income clinic, his suggestion was to go back to the ER and get them to get an on call ortho to come in and do an EVAL and cast it. If we don't figure out something today, I may do that tomorrow.

Can you call Breedlove to see if there is a policy in place and get some info ?
Anonymous
Have you called an orthopedist? Some will take you without insurance. You may need to pay $100 to see them and then billed later for everything else

Alright, my employer filed the claim! YAY! they said just call around and find an orthopedist who accepts workmans comp! Im so relieved!
