To have you go though a background check?
I'm just stunned to see that our au pair agency didn't request anything from us regarding criminal background check. Only our word. I would never allow my daughter to go live abroad in such situation. I would want to see the papers. And I have no problem giving out suck info about us either. It comes to show the girl has a family that cares about her. Would you mind? |
| I am likewise stunned that there's no routine background checking. Goes to show how profit driven this system is, with zero regard to valid safety concerns. How do we know of the consequences, if these young women are quietly ushered back to their home countries, if they dare to report abuse? |

Im the OP and talking to them and hearing from reputable sources I know that they go through extensive selection process and all sorts of background checks. I feel horrible for the girls getting into horrible abusive families.
I even read while ago about a man keeping girls as sex slaves and the au pair agency said they could not do anything since the girls were considered runaways. |

I'm willing to bet this, and worse, happens all the time. |
| OMG this is horrible. Poor girl! |
OMG! Everyone here needs to read that. |
| Another reason why State Dept. should shut down the Au Pair program. |
What are the primary reasons? |
NP here. Where are the success/failure statistics, PP? |
Good question.... |
| I think it's a good idea for au pair agencies to do background checks but unnecessary for parents to agree to them for a regular, FT live out nanny situation. |
Why not for live-out nannies, PP? |
Your reading comprehension is lacking, PP. I already told you. I don't think it's necessary. If a nanny finds something unpleasant about her experience with us, she can simply quit. A background check verifies nothing pertinent to the job and doesn't protect her from anything. |
| I think for any nanny or au pair it is a reasonable request and I'd be happy to do it. |
| 14:21 A background check can provide relevant info for a live out nanny. If you or your husband have a record that show that either of you are sexual offenders, have domestic violence or assault charges, etc. I wouldn't want to work for you and other nannies wouldn't want to either. So if you don't need a background check as an employer then the nanny shouldn't need one either. Sounds messed up to say that the parents shouldn't need a background check performed on them unless nanny is living with them. Just because she doesn't live with them doesn't mean they couldn't do something bad to her. |
