Our children will be in elementary school next fall and we are exploring after school care. I greatly appreciate input for a part-time care provider at home, or another option that we are unaware of.
If you could include hours/day or week, rates for services, job description, and anything else you feel is important to know and consider, I truly appreciate it. Also. What are some things to consider? Like, providing vs. own vehicle, insurance, (a reasonable) amount of work hours/week (for job to be considered), etc... We are in FCPS, Alexandria, VA. Thank you in advance. |
Hi there! I work for a family in Alexandria in the afternoons and evenings. I work for a SAHM who has 4 children. I work from about 2:30-9:00 Mon-Fri and get paid $18 per hour. I drive in, get the family vehicle, pick up kids from school, attend to extracurricular activities, help with homework, make dinner, general cleaning and laundry, bathe children or ensure bathing for older ones and tuck them all in before I leave. I consider myself a nanny as I do just about everything for these children including discipline, etc. I also work extra hours on weekends, stay later and provide overnight care when parents go out of town. So my experience is a little more than just after school.
I would consider the following when interviewing/hiring someone: * Either creating a schedule prior to or creating one with your new hire *Giving a weekly gas allowance or providing a vehicle *Consider that when kids are out of school or you go on vacation, this will interrupt your caregiver's salary, so discuss this and consider paying a flat rate per week regardless of days used *Do have the new caregiver sign a contract that includes expectations and detailed rate and job description * Discuss any habits your children have(social, behavioral, spiritual, intellectual, etc.) with caregiver and be willing and ready to receive feedback *establish boundaries prior to start date so that caregiver and child know who ultimate authority is Hope this helps!! |
