I have been in this positon for the past year,06/12/14 will make two years. I am paid a flat rate of 700.00 per month,I receive a paycheck by mail on the 15th of the month. In the beginning during our phone interview my boss informed me she could pay 900.00 a month both parents work for Riverside County Sheriff Department. Needless to say I have never received 900.00 a month salary, the mother says since I don't actually work eight hours everyday this is the reason why she pays me the 700.00. I do know that the minimum wage here in California is 8.00/hr doing the math I am not even making minimum wage.Would really like some insight please ladies!!!

Nanny in LA, I earn $30/hr for two kids. You are under paid and what they are doing is illegal. Call the labor board. |
Thank you, can i still contact labor board even though I'm under the table basically? would i get introuble? |
Nanny in LA's compensation is not representative of what most nannies get. That said, you should be getting paid minimum wage. How many hours are you working a month? You should not accept being paid under the table. You can report your employers but it will be your word against theirs unless you have a paper trail (checks, W-2, etc.). |
Are you illegal, OP? If so, I would think it's risky to complain but vote with your feet - leave. If you are legal to work here and your concern is that you have not been paying taxes on this, then yes that could be an issue for you but that's up to the IRS and compliance with min wage laws is up to the state Labor division so complaining to them would not necessarily get you in trouble directly w/ the IRS. |
Report and sue your employers! |
It took you almost 2 years to realize this? This is why nannies get taken advantage of...because they allow it for so long. The second you realized you weren't being paid what you had agreed upon, you should have said something. |
While there is a difference in what Riverside County nannies and LA nannies make, you should be getting paid at least minimum wage. But, since you are being paid under the table, you will have a harder time making your case. I would start looking for another job where you are being paid above board. Depending on your experience and if you are willing to move closer to LA, you could greatly increase your pay. |
Yes |
OP - what are your hours?? if you work only say 2 hours a day or other certain pt hours.
There are many agencies in the la area. I am a member of VIP and Westside. But got my current job off care.com. I also make a little less but weighed the options and what stuck of was - the family is in my current neighborhood and because it's multiples it will look good on my resume. I'm sure other LA nannies will agree (??) That LA is a big place and some areas pay better than others. Now getting at least minimum way is a yes and should be your number one priority. I have not had a previous job in riverside or near there but I'm not sure if you'll get that $30 a pp said ( other LA/riverside nannies - is this true). I would start looking for a new job and reach out to some agencies to help you. Good luck |
*stuck out was-
& *little less than my normal rate Sorry ![]() |
OP I live in CA as well and you're right, minimum wage is $8.00/Hr. They are most definitely under paying you. However since you are working under the table, you may not have a case if you choose to take legal action.
Shame on this family for taking advantage of you. |
I find it crazy that 2 people who work for the sheriff's department are NOT paying at least minimum wage, and are also paying under the table! I would tell them that you need at least min. wage and if they can't do that, they I would go ahead and report them. They will get into trouble for both issues. They should know better! You are being taken advantage of and I doubt you would get into any serious trouble over it. If anything, you might have to report your income from them for prior years if you didn't report it already and pay your back income taxes, and they would have to do the back taxes for employer stuff AND your share of those taxes since they didn't do it originally. |
Ummmm it's relevant when Riverside and LA county are beside each other ![]() |
Nanny in LA's compensation is NOT representative of what nannies in LA make. I know, I live on the Westside where the rates are highest. It is tiresome to hear her repeatedly cite that pay rate without giving any details on why she is receiving such a high rate. |
