leaving 15 mos old twins unattended!!!! RSS feed

We recently hired a live in nanny who had great references and seemed wonderful. She moved in and things seemed to be going well. One day, I came home early and found my 15 mos old twins downstairs alone with the dog, and the nanny nowhere to be found. I waited and 20 min later, she came down, looking startled. I asked why the kids were left alone, and her response was....you have to trust them!!!!!!!!!! I watched the nanny cam tapes and found this is a regular occurence. I confronted her and she truly doesn't get it, she thinks it is acceptable. I'm shocked and disappointed. Anyone else ever experience this?

Obviously that's not acceptable...have you started looking around?

Yeah not cool. Out of curiosity what was she doing for the 20 minutes they were alone??

MB, are you crazy?
Just wondering.

This is a pretty straightforward scenario. You need a new nanny.

Please just tell us she's gone, before your children get hurt.
Almost afraid to ask, where you found her...

Btw, having an animal with little children and a caregiver who you don't really know, is asking for trouble. Just my personal opinion.

20 minutes completely out of sight and earshot is really unacceptable. I'm all for independent play, but I always make sure I'm fairly close by (ie. in the kitchen getting lunch ready while the kids play in an attached playroom) and can intervene quickly if necessary. The fact that she couldn't even hear that you came home is crazy!

OP, you did fire her, right?
Anonymous
Yup, fired her but she is refusing to move out for 2 weeks. Both my husband and I work full time and we have no family here so I have no choice and I'm freaked something will happen. I told her in no uncertain terms if something happens on her watch or they are unattended, that is negligence and we will prosecute.

Pay her for the 2 weeks and get her out.
Get some legal advice, woman.

Since she was a live in, giving her two weeks to find a new place seems reasonable. However, just because she's living there for two weeks doesn't mean she has to continue watching your child for those two weeks. In fact I'd even argue that since you fired her for cause because of negligence, that you don't even have to give her two weeks pay (and I'm a nanny). Do you have any friends with nannies that might be able to do a temporary share while you find a new nanny? Any SAHM friends? I would be really hesitant to leave a child with someone who has already proven to be slightly neglectful after they've been fired.

Don't leave your kids with her and get her out even if it means paying for a hotel and severance for two weeks. Don't forget about the New York nanny murders!

OMG, you can get her out. These are your children so if worse case, just throw her a** into a hotel for a week or two and tell her the hotel is her serverance since she didn't leave when you first told her too.

She didn't care about your kids safety and now that she's fired she definitely doesn't care. What are you doing OP? Get her out!

ok, you are either a stupid troll or an incredibly stupid person. you are leaving two 15 months old babies in the hands of an irresponsible person who left them completely unattended for 20 minutes and was fired by you and now is refusing to leave your home?????? she did an awful job before, what kind of job you think she is going to do now that she has been fired? even if nobody gets badly hurt, do you think she is going to be a loving nanny for your kids? geez, and you are telling her that you are going to prosecute if something happens? so if one of your kids choke on a coin while she is upstairs "trusting" the kids you are going to sue her? hey, do not forget do seek punitive damages.....................I am in disbelief, you can't be real
