| If you are a live-in nanny and you have your own room, is it okay for your employer to allow other guests to stay and sleep in your room when you're not there? I just discovered that my employer allows other people to sleep in my room on days that I'm off. |

Depends. Is your room part of your pay? ie are you being paid less because a room is part of your compensation? if so it is not ok for your employers to let other people into your room.
You could try and sit down and have a conversation with them, but most likely you will need to find a new position |

I was a live-in for almost a year. I had my own "suite" in their basement (bedroom, attaching sitting room, attached bathroom, small kitchenette area). I was a full-time, live-in nanny so I was there all the time except for the holidays when I traveled back home to my home state. Last Christmas, I went home for 2 weeks and they had a ton of family coming in. They had 6 bedrooms upstairs but were going to be one bedroom short for MB's sister and I offered up my room while I was gone.
It is NOT okay for them to offer up your room without asking you before hand. If I had found out that my previous bosses were letting people stay in my room without asking me, I'd seriously consider quitting. Before I left for Christmas last year, I made sure to clean up all my stuff and put certain things away. It is not okay for them to let people stay in your room without 1) getting your permission and 2) allowing you to put/hide away anything you might need/want to. |
| Thank you. |
| NOOOOOOO |
| Absolutely NOT! I'D be very upset about this. |
No, it is not. The room is always part of your pay, anyone saying it isn't is lying. Unless it is not your room but a room you USE while you are there, like if you live in days you work and have your own apartment for weekends. In that case, you are using their "guest" room and are generally not leaving your stuff in there. I always ask for a keyed locking doorknob on my room for this reason. I want to be able to lock the door while I am inside, and chose to lock the door when I am out. Not all kids are great about not going into other people's private spaces and so it is just easier to have the option to lock it anytime you want to. I do usually let the parents know where there is a second spare key (hidden outside of the room) in case of an emergency, so they don't have to kick down the door. I am also the type that notices when things of mine have been moved, and so I can always tell when someone has been in my room without permission.

I'm confused. How often are you gone??? Do you only sleep there a few nights a week?
If its your "home", then no. If you are a 24 hours nanny a few days a week, but have your own place, then I would say that its their room to use as they please when you are not working. |
