Hello,

I am new to the nanny business and want to know if we should pay our nanny for all Federal Holidays even though she is not going to be working those days.

I'm a nanny and yes, I have paid federal holidays outlined in my contract, so if a holiday falls on a regular working day I am off with pay that day. If I weren't paid for federal holidays I'd have a tough time paying my bills this time of year - there are so many of them!

+1 Since you are asking this question you should also consider what you do as far as sick days, bad weather days, and vacation (yours and hers). Standard PTO package for nannies tend to be 2 weeks vacation (one week of her choosing and one week to coincide with yours) and 3-5 sick days. People often forget to include something about inclement weather in the contract and it is sure to come up if you don't!

PP poster and I forgot to add, that you should be careful offering all federal holidays because only the federal government truly follows that holiday schedule. Your nanny should get the same holidays as your family.

We employ a full-time nanny and so on the days when the nanny is off because we don't have to work due to holidays, the nanny gets paid.

I give our nanny all the same days off we get (which is a lot). Close to the Fed holidays, plus day after T-giving, week of Christmas, etc. And I pay her for all of them, of course. She isn't choosing not to work those days.

Yes, my nanny gets the same paid days off that I get, which ends up being all the Federal holidays except for Veterans Day.

She also gets paid if I don't need her to work -- because I'm on vacation or grandparents are in or whatever the case may be. That's the way all daycares operate and it seems only fair for the nanny to be paid as well.

As a nanny, I typically am given New Years, Memorial Day, Labor Day, July 4, Thanksgiving and the day after, and Christmas off with pay. As for the other holidays like Veteran's Day and such, it is completely your call, but they are not holidays your average nanny expects to have off and be paid for by the employer.

As an MB, I give my nanny paid time off on the days I dont have to work - new years day, Presidents day, memorial day, july 4th, labor day, thanksgiving day and the day after thanksgiving, christmas day). She also gets paid when I am on vacation. She gets 5 days sick leave and 2 weeks of vacation - 1 of her choosing and 1 week coinciding with my vacation - all paid.

I have a 1 day a week babysitter for half the day. Do I need to pay her for days like Thanksgiving? Also, is it expected that I pay her when we go on vacation?

Would the answers change if she worked 2 days a week or longer days?

To last PP - my vote for the 1/2 day a week sitter is no holiday pay (unless you sign a contract that calls for it). If it's 1 full day, it's debatable. If it's 2 full days then she likely relies on your for a good portion of her income so then i'd say yes to holiday pay.
