You're allowed. I promise! And just like your employer, you get what you pay for. What's good enough for you is good enough. Right?

If this rule made sense then no woman would work since the nanny would be paid the same amount as they earn!

Truth is, it doesn’t take much skill to play with blocks with my child and push a baby around the neighborhood. Whereas I have a specific exepertise that most do not have and my employer recognizes this and my salary reflects this.

Perhaps this explains why so many big kids (their knees are stuffed in their faces) are still getting pushed around in a stroller:
neither the parents nor the sitter can figure out when the kid should be walking.

Not sure. I’m not hiring a nanny to raise my child. I do that. A nanny is just to look after them and keep them out of trouble.

Perhaps you aren’t used to living in a city... if your means if transportaiton is walking then if you’re walking with a toddler it will takes way too long to get anywhere. Hence the scooter or stroller.

Nope. Nanny here. Once a child is capable of walking, we walk, and I plan to carry if/when they are tired, and I budget time accordingly. When they are babied in one way (stroller), they don’t understand as easily that they need to not be babied in other ways (potty training and talking correctly).

Weird. I take my child in a stroller to the grocery store as it’s almosf a mile away. It would take us ages to both walk and there’s no way I could carry her. There’s no way you live in a city or you’d understand this.

Almost every child at my neighborhood toddler story time shows up in a stroller and it’s because all of the moms and nannies walked there.

No worries. Strollers are often appropriate for toddlers.

If there were "tons of resources" out there with actual data on nanny wages, we wouldn't have the constant questions on this forum asking about the full range of real nanny wages.

Each nanny must determine her own rates based on her experience and market demand for her individual skills.

Exactly.

Exactly indeed. Simple supply & demand for what s/he has to offer.

6 and/or 12 month performance bonuses also help motivate a good nanny to stay a good nanny.

You didn't share any details about her training or experience, nor did you mention your expectations or priorities. But you certainly got a bargain as you obviously know. Curious how she supported herself on $15/hr. Did she have to live with friends or family to help support herself?

Her previous employer loved and cherished her so much that the old boss lent her the money to buy a condo for her and her 3 children. She lives with 2 of her adult children in their condo. I believe the adult children cover most of the bills. All her kids did very well (UVA for university) so she must have done something right.

She is very trustworthy, is college educated and a wonderful cook. All our friends always praised our nanny and told us how lucky we were. She made homemade baby food and also prepped dinner for our family every night. She was awesome.

Awesome but only made 15$ an hour

I am not pregnant with my 3rd child. I will be looking for infant help but I stay home. I will expect to pay $15-20 per hour because that is the going rate.

DH earns a 7 figure income. I am very well aware of supply and demand. The going rate is $15-20. We used to live in Manhattan and even in the Upper East Side, many nannies earned $15/hr.

I also used to live in the Upper East Side. I'm always surprised to see how many of the babysitters struggle with basic English skills. And you wonder why so many children struggle with speaking properly.

lol, this thread has not aged well. 20-30/hr was ridiculous 5 years ago, it's ridiculous now. I don't doubt that some folks are paying it but it is definitely NOT the going rate.

All you know is what you pay, and what your friends tell you.

True, but it's more than. It's going on care.com, it's interviewing potential caregivers and their experiences, etc.

Los angeles is so cool. And you make so so much money as a nanny there! Who would have thought that with all the cheap immigrant labor the area is known for. Personally, I loved the 60 minute commutes in a traffic jam twice a day.

And that's a lot more accurate that DCUM anonymous posts in English!
