Nanny always shows up 40 minutes early RSS feed

My nanny does the same but prefers to sit in her car and listen to the radio and read. She comes in exactly on the dot. I actually wish she would arrive a little earlier to use the restroom and make herself a hot drink but she rather do that on the clock, lol.

Just to put the numbers out there...

$20 hr x 40 hrs/wk x 50 wks/year = $40,000- pre tax. Living wage for 1 adult in DC is $20.12, $17.25 in MD, and $16.61 in VA as of 2021. Of course, it's a little higher in areas of MD and VA closer to DC.
So...$20/hr is *technically* a living wage in MD and VA, but not much more. If your nanny lives in DC, $20/hr is not even a living wage for one person, let alone someone with children.

If I were her, I honestly would stop for a hot breakfast + coffee at a nearby coffee shop or just read vs. coming in so early - but that is just me.

Perhaps you can offer her a key so she can let herself in & have her sit in the living room either watching television or reading a book.
Of course, stress to her that she make herself comfortable but that you will begin paying her on her actual starting time.

Good luck.

That requires money that not everyone can afford to spend 5 mornings per week, especially when many families only want to pay $20/hr.

$20 an hour is perfectly reasonable for a nanny.

Sure, you may think that. Stopping for a hot breakfast and coffee isn't something that someone making $20/hour does though...

No, it isn’t. Not if you want a legal nanny who can speak and, most importantly, read in English. Not in any major city. Trust me on this.

I would let her know this is difficult for your schedule. She can go somewhere for coffee/breakfast or wait in her car. My current nanny was doing the same and we discussed her start time with her. She stopped showing up so early then thankfully.

Your nanny it's weird. As a nanny, I woul feel bad if I just show up 40 min earlier to my start time. Bcs I do understand my employers need their own privacy for whatever their routine is in the morning. What if they just want to feel free just hanging out in underwear around their house. Being 5, 7 or 10 min early; would be ok. She could wait perfectly in her car. For me, that would be rude. Some comment above says talk to her and modify her schedule starting earlier. This is not the case. Bcs maybe the mom doesn't need her to come so early. Bcs I guess in the hiring process both agreed how many hours she would be needed and what the set schedule it would be. Even thought, if the mom would agree that nanny comes so early; why she should have to pay for those extra 40 min? Or why she should have to move her set schedule starting earlier and finishing earlier? Bcs it wouldn't be the employers choice; it would be the nanny's choice wanting to show up 40 min early. To OP talk to your nanny and just tell her that it would be nice if she just show up 10 min early; as you have a very busy family morning.
